What do you think? I thought the first CD (Rising Force) was revolutionary.

Everything after that went downhill - if he could just stop playing those wank-filled solos....

He's fast, he's technical, and he can really shred... but he can't write a good song to save his life, IMO.

Alcatrazz was the last good thing I really dug... All his solos from that point on were just rehashed from Alcatrazz - Live Sentence

Don't care what he's like as a person, I love his music (yeah, his songwriting is not great, and I wish he'd let someone else write the lyrics  ), own all his albums, been into him for 10 years, and will continue to support him for as long as he keeps putting cool stuff out.

'Nuff said :D

He would benefit from having a decent producer, I think. I mean, someone needs to tell him, for example, that a verse consisting of two lines is not really much of a verse. Some potentially great songs on Magnum Opus that are trashed due to this.......

Oh, and Xenophobe- I don't have his non-solo stuff (or thankfully, from what I've heard about it, W2EAW), so I don't know :(

hahaha. I can't believe there is actually more votes for "real deal".

Someone needs a hearing test done or needs to hear more guitar players. I would of liked to vote for the other 3 nominations all together but it wouldn't allow me to do that :p . I think yngwie isn't worth mentioning at all. He plays very crappy guitar and isn't even average. His music is boring technical flash without any substance or feelings and it all sounds the same after awhile. Like a picture being repainted 30 different times but in the same way. Otherwise if not for that his background music is so damn fake as well. The only way to get any kind of emotion out of his music is to smack yourself in the face with a hammer when playing his cd. Oh and I refuse to take someone seriously who wears spandex and frilly laced shirts as "casual" clothing.

Influence aside he's pretty mediocre; too limited harmonically, can't say I'm that keen on his dynamics or phrasing either. I'll give his first album a nod, though.

I like the first three albums, after that, it's pretty bad.... he is a great player of course, but he seemed to have run out of ideas after that....

I agree with your entire post, except the part quoted. I am a guitar player and it infuriates me further that he wastes his talent by playing that masturbatory egotistical crap that seems to dwindle forever (and go nowhere).

Unfortunately I used to think that speed etc was cool, but now it annoys me - particularly because on each album, he always seems to pull off a single moment (perhaps two) of pure magic. The rest is utter bollocks.

On the Ozzy tribute, "Bat Head Soup", he gets to play 'Mr. Crowley'. He inevitably ruined a classic song by one of the greatest guitar players ever (Rhoads) by doing playing his usual wank-filled aribtrary notes at the speed of light. That was a true moment of shame.

I agree with about everyone here-
His first album is a landmark in guitar playing...and everything else since is a reahash of that.

He is one of the best players on the face of the planet..but as others have, stated, and I second, he can't write a decent song to save his life.

At least players like Steve Vai and Satriani know how to put a sembalance of a song together, and make great music. Unlike Malmsteen..who just wanks like mad.

A major waste of talent

i voted for him as the real deal but in part he is also a waste of talent his 1st solo album is fantastic and the 1st concerto album that came out in 99 i think was excellent stuff as for his rock albums they are hit and miss odyssey had some decent writing in deju vu and dreaming but overall he is not good at songwriting and some point in the 80s he should have joined a major band his career would have went further. as for his rep as a asshole ive met him twice and he was very nice.

Yngwie and Dio should have joined forces ages ago - they would have brought out the best in each other. Now they're on the same label (spitfire) but the ego's have not diminished....
