You guys impulsing direct-recording amp heads: How's it sound beforehand?

Okay, so I thought I might try my hand at recording my amp direct and impulsing because I've heard some killer results here. How do you do it and what does it sound like before the impulse is added? I tried with a 5150 block letter using the FX send and the preamp out and it was a fizzy, shrill mess. So, how do you do it and how should it sound?

i think its supposed to sound fizzy and crap, and the impulse creates the cab effect, making it into a proper guitar soung

Yep, it sounds like ass. Some people put the plugin on the input to monitor their tone with the Impulse. I get too much latency trying to do that (if I'm even doing it right).

I monitor the signal AFTER the impulse and mute the direct signal. With SiR there is too much latency but with revalver 2 or voxengo boogex I can go with 3 ms on an E-mu 1212m without problems.

Sorry for being a little off topic but is there anyway to like make it so boogex doesnt color the sound with its own amp sims?

No there isn't, but you can get close enough:
