You may like this new mix! tdwp-ish

brian and sturgis better get running hahaha

I look up to and respect both of these guys. Brian has been a big help, and Ive even adapted some of his editing styles and such. Also now i like running my Reverb right on the drum buss instead of on a separate buss. Thanks for that tip Brian!

So, yea to be mentioned with both of these guys makes me happy! :kickass:

Sounds awesome!!

cant wait for more details of the recording >.<

could i ask what is the purpose of the Reverb on the drum buss? (it would be awesome if you could explain it)

My only complaint is I'd like to hear more bass in there.
but yeah, this sounds fucking INSANE.

Sounds awesome, any details on the gear used? (guitar, drums)

Ok some dirt huh.....

Guitars:

Shecter c1 of some sort with a emg81 installed. I believe this song was in drop C and the other song was standard D (1 whole step down). Or its the other way around, we used 52's gauge strings if i recall right. Then that went into my Countryman Type 85 dir box and to my Digi002 mic preamp and last but not least Pod Farm with Diamond Plate. Small eq cut at 2k in protools with stock eq, high pass 70hz, low pass 12k and that was it.

Drums:

This is my favorite here, and I will tell you why. The drummer brought all new skins! I almost forgot how good drums can sound with new skins. Ive been working with cheap fucks that will barley buy new strings let alone drum skins. S needless to say I was very, very pumped! We put them on and I did some stretching and tunning and then I took drum samples of each drum. The drums were PDP Mxr 8 ply Maple I guess. So i used a I5 audix on the top snare and 57 on the bottom and then a d2 on the toms for sampling. Then i used my normal mk012 on overheads and sm7 on hats and thats it really for tracking.

Now in Mixing I used these drum samples I took and they are like 60% of what your hearing. Well besides kick as I just used Slate 100% there because we did not take a kick sample. So yea i blended in snare 20 under the Original sample and also blended in some Slate Fat toms under the Original toms. I'm Really feeling better that I did not just rely 100% on Slate this time around and it feels rewarding. Maybe next time 100% my samples! Ok back on track, drums all had Waves SSl on them and then sent to a drum buss with Dverb. No magic just a lot of eqing on the original drum samples and compression.

Bass:

who cares :heh:

jk but I don't remember wtf we used and it was nothing great and I ran into Type 85 dir box and then used a uad plugin preflex. Lots of eq after that and then L1 to smash it.

Yeah I'm with this guy. It's not as bad as like And Justice For All bass for instance, but you definitely could end up with a fuller mix with a few db push on that bass. Otherwise great job. Whether or not it was used, vox sound great cause they aren't totally gayified with autotune.

Well instead of blending the reverb in on a different aux/buss track and routing all your drums to that verb, you just slap the reverb right on your main drum buss and use the mix knob to blend verb to taste. Were both using Dverb but i think most reverbs have a wet/dry knob. For some reason this just worked for me and it saves me routing all my drums to 2 different busses and just keeps shit simple. Give it a try.....

It's a really fucking good mix but, if I hadn't read the title I'd think it was a Sturgis production (minus a lot of the crazy production accents he adds).

That's pretty flattering considering, but I guess it's hard to NOT deviate away from that kind of sound when you're recording a band of the genre' that Joey basically created.

=D

Good job dude

Total n00b question, but how do you use Pod Farm with non-Line 6 hardware? Mine just says 'non-authorized' device if I try to use a different audio interface.

basically all your drums got reverb, even the kick I assume, am I wrong?

I have a pod xt pro but I bought the license so I can use without the Line 6 hardware and just use on my Ilok.

Nope I don't use reverb on the kick unless I feel the song needs some. I usually just buss my snare and toms to the reverb/drum buss and then use a send and send a bit of hats and overheads to the drum buss to catch a little reverb. Usually the overheads skip my drum buss and the kick as well and they go strait to the main 2 buss.

The only downside to this whole method is that you really cant eq the reverb because it will effect all the drums on the drum buss.

really nice joshua! he only thing is the bass, its a little empty sounding for my taste, but i guess for this style its cool!

is this quad tracked?

can you share details on your overhead eq? did you add a room mic to the sound like joey does ?

Dual tracked

The band was from out of State so we were very limited on time. Plus I don't think this style really needs 4 rhythm tracks to be honest.

Yes on the room mic as well and the eq was really simple. Waves SSL on Overheads and Hats and cutting 350hz down on the hats and I used a digi eq plugin to cut the overheads up to 700hz. Then i used the ssl plug to bring in some highs with a shelf and compress the overheads a bit. I also edited the high hat track so that it only plays when the high hats are played. Again nothing crazy or weired. All my drums had a waves ssl plugin on them and that was it unless i needed another eq (like overheads) to do something the ssl could not.
