Eddie Van Halen
Love him! Has the best lead style I've ever heard, totally exciting, unpredictable and flamboyant which I much prefer to endless scale runs. Also love the way he intertwines his lead and rhythm into 1 track omst of the time.. the man is a genious! One more word which must be mentioned: ERUPTION!!!! Best solo ever? I think so :D

The other thing I love about him, is that he plays incredibly hard licks but makes them sound SO damn easy, that I listen and think "Ahhhh that ain't hard" and try to learn it, see a tab, and think WHAT THE HELL? He's doing all that there?? You don't even notice!!! To me, that is a sign of a great guitarist moreso than making the solos sound hard deliberately (*cough* Malmsteen *cough*) so people say "wow how does he play that".

Randy Rhoads
Nobody has a knack for picking out the right notes to make a melody sound cool like he does! Plus, was hugely innovative in the arising of the whole neo-classical thing, and Mr. Crowly, Crazy Train, Over The Mountain and Revelation (Mother Earth) are 4 of my fave solos ever.

George Lynch
Great knack for melody and catchiness mixed with a nice flashiness, and has a great tone too! Plus awesome riffs... great guitarist all together! His solos on Back For The Attack especially are just so smooth and sounhe makes it sound easy!

Marty Friedman
Cacophony's Speed Metal Symphony anyone? Dragon's Kiss anyone? Speed Metal Symphony is the best virtuoso guitar album I've ever heard I think. Amazing stuff!!!! Flashy, melodic, but ballsy, slashin' and thrashin' at the same time! Plus his solos with Megadeth are so damn good!

Vinnie Vincent
Great songwriter, excellent shredder. He lacks the melody in his solos the others have, but rather than just sound weak and boring like some other guitarists (Malmsteen again hahaha! sorry I hate him), his over-the-top displays of speed add to the intensity of the music and make for an ear shattering listening experience which I love. Very ballsy, ear piercing, extreme, totally metal stuff. Plus, like with Eddie, I lovethe way he blends lead fills with his riffs. Oh and his riffs are the BEST, especially in songs like Animal and Shoot U Full Of Love... they flow into each other so seamlessly you don't notice the riffs making the verse, bridge, chorus, etc.

Other honourable mentions:

Steve Vai - just haven't heard enough but what a talent!

Michael Angelo - arguably has easily the most technical ability out of any guitarist here (plays faster than anyone, and with left and right hand simulataneously on a 4 neck guitar shpaed like a cross!), just usually doesn't fit it into the context of the song hahaha. He can though, listen to Crazy Love by Nitro, nice and melodic hehe.

Zakk Wydle - one of the most exciting guitarists ever.

Slash - for his attitude and balls, the Sweet Child solo, and he looks cool :D

Haha I was going to say something similar!

Actually, I voted for Satriani, Petrucci, Friedman, Slash and Vernon Reid, cos I guess they're my favourites of that lot.

I'd also vote for Chuck, Mike Amott, Bill Steer and Anders Bjorler if they were on there. :)

Well I voted mostly for other, but this damned thing at work won't let me vote.

Buck D'harma - buy any of the first four Blue Oyster Cult albums and find a part where he isn't soloing. Check out the last half of 'This Ain't the Summer of Love' or all of 'Godzilla'. He's soloing the whole time and it's awesome.

Ritchie Blackmore - if weren't for him, I would not be here today. Neither would you.

Chuck Schuldiner - RIP. Metal would not be the same if not for him.

Zakk Wylde and Eddie Van Halen speak for themselves.

I voted before I knew I could vote for 5 :(

I DID vote for John Petrucci, but I would have also voted for Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde, Jason Becker and Slash, because they all rule. Oh, and Shredder from TMNT, because he had a cool suit! :)

I put myself down for:

Vai - absolute freak and the only one pushing the limits
Satch - couldn't leave him out, legend
Petrucci - Gotta love him, even if it is only for his solo in Under A Glass Moon - but all his stuff rocks (even the old clinic songs)
Other - Steve Morse - what more needs to be said
Other - Tore Osbty - He used to be in Conception and now in Ark (signed to Vai's label Favored Nations, and Inside Out). This guy sure can shred. If you wnat to check him out check out www.arksite.com - its well worth checking out for fans for amazing prog.

Steve Vai- Devy played on his Sex and Religion album,so thefore he is a legend.

Michael Angelo-For being the innovator of the 4neck guitar and add a high A string so he can shred in the "Mandolin range"

Slash- His solo's were set to emotion of the songs and thus came out alot better imo.

Eddie-Nuff Said

Zakk Wylde-cos he's a fuckin champ.

Was in Nitro. He's officially the fastest guitarist of all time if I'm not mistaken... but the amazing thing is that he is just as fast with his non-preferred hand as he is with his preferred hand and plays on two necks coming out in opposite direction simultaneously.

I really must get back into 80s rock and metal again. Thems were the days, when Poison were metal and Metallica weren't that well-known.

Excuse me, EXCUSE ME, but where is Bruce Kulick? Trent, you of all people should have put him on the list, especially after your recent exposure to the brilliance of Asylum!

And while I'm at it, where are Page, Iommi, May, Smith, Murray, Tipton, Downing and several other influential players whose names I won't list because you should know them already? To file them all under "other" is nothing short of sacrilege.

Hang your head in shame, young man...
