So in the Other thread about 'Autumn Reflection' someone highly praised this as one of the greatest songs ever written. Id like to know what peoples feelings towards 'greatest songs ever created' are...Heres Mine.

Katatonia - In the White
Elbow - Red
Radiohead - Street Spirit or Paranoid Android
Paatos - Tea
My Dying Bride - The Cry of Mankind
Massive Attack - Tear Drop

Mostly new stuff. It's late, and my long term memory isn't firing:

Autumn Reflection - Novembers Doom
Dracula - Iced Earth
The Coffin Ships - Primordial
Gods to the Godless - Primordial
Face of Melinda - Opeth
Demise and Vestige - Zero Hour
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
She Painted Fire Across the Skyline - Agalloch
As Fire Swept Clean The Earth - Enslaved

The first that come into mind

March for Revenge (Manowar)
Phantom of the Opera (Iron Maiden)
I of the Storm (Psychotic Waltz)
Candlelight Fantasia (Symphony X)
Of Temptation Born (Orphaned Land)
Halo Dies (Orphaned Land)
Suite Sister Mary (Queensryche)
Oblivion Ocean (Pain of Salvation)
Geroy Asfal'ta (Aria)
Summerlonging Angels (Wastefall)
Autumn Reflection (Novembers Doom)

and the list has no end...

There are so many songs in the world that are "greatest" to me, usually for personal reasons, I couldn't even list them all. I'll try to think of some songs just off the top of my head that I really love and think are as close to "the greatest" as possible.....

"That's the Way"- Led Zeppelin
"Echoes"- Pink Floyd
"It's Over"- Roy Orbison
"Victim of Changes"- Judas Priest
"Divinity"- Amorphis
"Burn"- Deep Purple
"Stranger Aeons"- Entombed
"Love Will Tear Us Apart"- Joy Divison
"Diary Of A Madman"- Ozzy Osbourne
"Hybrid Moments"- The Misfits
"S.O.S"- Abba
"The Usurper"- Celtic Frost
"Under the Blade"- Twisted Sister
"Black Metal"- Venom
"Tempus Fugit"- Yes
"Communion"- Mary My Hope
"Paranoid Android"- Radiohead
"Omertia"- Katatonia

This could go on and on....it'd be more logical for me to break it down into categories like "greatest metal songs" and "greatest new wave songs" and so on. But that would get ridiculously long then!

And then there's certain artists who I can't just choose one or two greatest songs from (Kiss, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Voivod...) and certain albums where I think every song on the album is perfect and "greatest" as a whole (The Beatles "Revolver", Celtic Frost "Into the Pandemonium", Motorhead "Orgasmatron", etc....) I just get much too attached to the music I love to be able to simplify and generalize it.

Yeah, I was thinkin about albums. A perfect album to me doesnt Necceserily mean all the songs are amazing, but that all the tracks must relate to each other in some way.
The Beatles revolver is definatley one of those albums
My arms your hearse by Opeth
Akercocke- Words that go unspoken, deeds that go undone
Massive Attack- mezzanine is a fantastic one
Prodigy- Fat of the land
Jeff Buckley Grace aswell.. Theres just soo much.

My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness
Nevermore - No More Will
Anathema - Lost Control
Winds - In All Reflections
Novembers Doom - Harmony Divine
Emperor - Thus Spake the Nightspirit

Nah, if you read my blurb beneath my list you'll see that I said that it's impossible for me to pick just one "greatest" Voivod song. I could do a list of just Voivod songs.

Funny though, while I do really like "Tribal Convictions" I don't think that'd be one I'd consider as a "greatest" song.

I'd probably pick "Korgull the Exterminator", "Ravenous Medicine", "Missing Sequences", "Killing Technology", "Clouds in my House", "Angel Rat", "Fix My Heart", "Nanoman".....ah like I said this could go on and on.....

I know what you mean. It would be impossible for me to pick one MOTORHEAD track as my favorite...

This is extremely hard, I'll go with in the last year; Drudhk--Furrows of Gods, When the Flame turns to Ash, Glare of Autumn. Novembers Doom--Dark World Burden, Autumn Reflection,Absence of Grace. Agalloch--Misshapen Steed, In the Shadow of our Pale Companion, Hawthorne Passage,The Melancholy Spirit. Enslaved--The Crossing, Queen of the Forest, Essence, Fusion of Sense and Earth. Too many to list, my brain is fried.

This is a much harder list to make then just a "favorite" list. To be called one of the "greatest" songs written, I think of songs that will last the test of time, as well as the emotion it evokes. I don't LOVE all of these songs, but I think they belong on a "greatest" list. I'm sure my list will surprise some of you. haha

"Adagio for Strings" - Samuel Barber
"Dust in the Wind" - Kansas
"Yesterday" - The Beatles
"Black Sabbath" - Black Sabbath
"Love Song" - The Cure
"When Doves Cry" - Prince
"The End" - The Doors
"Riders on the Storm" - The Doors
"Master of Puppets" - Metallica
"Stairway to Heaven" - Led Zeppelin
"Hotel California" - Eagles
"The Boys of Summer" - Don Henley
"Wicked Game" - Chris Isaak
"Free Bird" - Lynyrd Skynyrd
"Mercy Street" - Peter Gabriel
"Don't Give Up" - Peter Gabriel
"Hey You" - Pink Floyd

This could go on and on...

I agree that just about all of the songs Paul listed could be considered "greatest songs of all time". There's alot of songs that from a songwriting perspective and in terms of how many generations of people it will affect should be listed. My list was more along the lines of the songs that've made the biggest impact on me, and if I was to have a cd or Ipod set on permanent repeat, those are the songs I'd most want to hear.

Man, I forgot about Prince too. I could definitely think of a couple of songs for sure that'd be on my list.

''Stairway to Heaven''-Led Zeppelin
''My Wine in Silence''-My Dying Bride
