The most frightening place I can imagine being in is a void in space. No bearings, no point of reference, all five senses registered useless. You could not avoid becoming insane.

 Agreed. The aura of ignorance around that place would be crippling.

Look into Wolfgang Peterson's "Das Boot" if you 'want' to experience this nightmare...on the silver screen that is.
It is a great movie, very captivating journey through the lives of a crew aboard a WWII U-Boat, inspired by a photojournalist's account of an actual voyage. It is a German made film too! No Hollywood sentiment or grandiose embellishment! :D

As I was reading through the posts thinking to myself, my most frightening place/situation (if we are making them up) would have to be being on fire, drowning in any substance or being in a space without enough oxygen, then I saw your post hoser and it reminded me of that excellent Swedish movie that I am pretty sure is called 'The Vanishing'. "Sauskia!" That film ends with a shiver!

Im reading a book about a russian journalists experiance in Afghanistan, he was interviewing a guy. "I was on patrol with 2 other guys. We ran into a sniper and I was able to make my way into a trench. I seen sand pouting around me. It was like he was toying with me. The sound of bullets entering a dead body is something I would never wish upon anyone, even my enemies."

here's what scares me:

being stuck on a high-rise building that is burning with some many degress of temperature and is about to collapse; being trapped on the uppermost floors, worried, fearful, and resolved inscrutably on a fate I never asked for--- on the phone with loved ones rendering my last "good-byes" and "i love you's"-- trapped beyond one's control, fated to an end of life that was teeming only moments before with so many hopes and dreams.

even more frightening is having to jump from such high places in order to avoid being burnt to death, or out of sheer desperation.

(oh my god, how horrible, how sad. Sorry I had to bring this up)
