Your views on COSM…

Old newbie
I've tried almost every amp simulator out there (well except V-Amp… and Axe-FX) for recording guitars straight into my computer : POD 2.0/XT/X3, Vox Tonelab, Zoom G9, Digitech GSP1101, Boss GT8, Amplitube 2, Guitar Rig 2, Rev MKII/III, Wagner… I like the versatility and reliability of Boss multifx, but for recording (using nothing else, just the amp model+cab model sound of the unit), I haven't heard anything good enough from the COSM modeling technology. For more than one year I've tweaked my GT8 to death, tried other user patches, but it didn't worked for me. Now, this forum is not product-oriented, its not GT Central or Line 6 forums here, so I would like to hear your opinion on that. Did someone get a convincing metal rythm sound with a GT8 ? I can even recall someone posting a sample recorded with a GT8 here, and there have been tons of samples with POD/ Axe Fx/ Revalver etc… No product war please, that's not my point ;)

Roland was first and invented amp modeling with COSM in the early 90s on the original VG-8. However, they don't even come close to getting high gain sounds right, and I don't think they've really improved at all since those days.

I even tried out the VG-99 last year and it was laughable. The high gain sounds reminded me of an early 90s ZOOM, even after considerable tweaking.

Ive used the 5150 sounds from my gt3 when recording years ago, mostly to blend in very slightly, however knowing and using most of the other products youve listed more recently I certainly wouldnt bother with it ever again. My gt3 ( top of the line like 9 years ago ) is now sitting in the fx loops where I can use delays, verbs, chorus......, If your looking for a good reason to keep it around I would say start programming expression pedal patches with effect parameters that most single pedals dont allow maximum flexability on such as chorus intensity, delay repeats, flange speed .........., atleast thats the reason I havent parted with my very outdated board yet

In my limited experience with COSM I'd say it's just not good enough to be convincing. I've only owned the following 2 COSM products, Boss GP-20 Amp Factory double-pedal and the PW-10 V-Wah. The GP-20 had a pretty good Blackface tone to me though I;ve never played a real vintage amp. It had about 6 different mid to high gain amp models and to me they all sounded like the same exact distorion with a little different EQ and more and more gain. The crunch, break-up, etc were all the same on the 'JCM 800' thru the Recto.

As for the PW-10... I like the wah sounds a lot. The distortions it has are much the same as the GP-20. To make it worse, the only controls there are for the distortions are the gain. No tone, eq, etc so it's kinda useless really. The Wahs are very nice to me. I did own a CryBaby 535Q and thought it was a little too lifeless, flat and tone-killing. The V-Wah models are very use able and you can tweak the hell out of them. I don't know how accurate of a recreation the models are but I like them all. The only downside to the V-Wahs' wahs is there is a distinct digital background noise the pedal generates which you'd probably only hear in a quiet situation like recording. The pedal has a noise suppressor in it for that but it's very awkward to program the pedal at all. I got mine for about $60 and it gets the wah sounds I want so I'd say I win in that respect.

That GP-20 pedal lasted about 3 weeks before I sold it. I tried really hard to like it but in the end it was not exceptional in any way. I have a pair of Digitech Genesis3's and the Boss GP-20 couldn't get any tones the Genesis3s couldn't. Plus with the Genesis3's I have full midi control and patch x-fer via MIDI to PC, etc. Thanks to this forum and these damn impulse files though I rarely use the Genesis3s anymore.

I really like to play COSM, its dynamic and feel very real, but it doesnt sound real for shit(Except for effectsmodelling.).
The microcube will always be one of my favorite amps(Good enough sounds to take with you in the woods. ;D), but for serious work, no way.

I remember someone posting some GT-8 clips a while ago that sounded pretty good but it rarely gets talked about here. General consensus is that its amp sims suck while the effects are great. Having a GT-8 myself I would agree.
You might want to try it with impulses/ I think it would be much better.

Hey that's interesting, would like to hear that. Do you have the link of the old thread ? If you bypass the cab sim and use a real speaker, the GT8 sure sounds better, although imho it still can't compete with line 6/Digitech.

btw I posted this thread on various forums a while ago :

check it, it's a sample-based comparison between various modelers. I must post new samples though, with my final guitar sound, which uses amplitube/Revalver MK II, with other plugins like C4. The sound is so much better than on these old clips, it's ridiculous

Have been using impulses for quite some time now, agree, its the way to go for direct recording. I don't think it will do miracles with COSM though

Here's one thread I found for you. Not very helpful though. 1st clip is no more and 2nd is pretty cool but fizzy.
Yeah, you should post a clip of your latest sound sometime.

As much as I tried to record a decent high-gain clip with the GT8 direct into DAW, I tried and I tried and I tried . . . and every time it was an epic fail. :ill: The COSM amps sound plasticky, annoying and lifeless no matter what you do with them. . . Impulses help, but only to a point. The COSM cabsims - totally useless IMO. Recording through a cab and micing it helps tremendously, but I bought the GT8 for SILENT recording goddammit! :yell:

I sold my GT8 and bought a POD XTL - didn't like it either and sold it as well. I have since then settled on a simple recording setup consisting of a tube preamp and impulses and I'm a happy camper. Well, my recordings still suck, but... that's not due to any fault of my gear.

There are a few things I miss from the GT8 though - gotta love the flexibility of those assigns!!! The wah was sweet, especially the CryBaby sim. The delays simply ruled.

And the UniVibe sim - I loved it. Put it in front of your amp (yes, in front, not after) and you instantly have that Trey Azagthoth lead sound (or at least the vibe of his sound...).

Thanks for your link ! here's some samples :

Here it's Amplitube 2 left, Revalver MK II right, with some other plugins :
http://pages.intnet.mu/fremen/Tests/AT2_&_RvMkII.mp3

that's the sound I'll use on my album, except if Amplitube Metal & Rev MK III makes me change my mind, just listen to these samples, from another song :
http://pages.intnet.mu/fremen/Samples/REV_MKIII_tests.rar

And last but not least, a full song, only 128 kbps though :

Sounds good. I don't care for the vocal melodies though. I feel like you need to belt it out more and change it up a bit to make it more exciting and interesting. Just my opinion.
What did you use for the keys and bass?
Also, are the 6505 & JSX clips from the actual amps or presets?
It all sounds great.
