I was never into them growing up, but I've gotten really into Alice in Chains for the first time. I always semi liked them but I am seriously digging their stuff.

anyway, Which do you prefer, Dirt or Facelift? and feel free to pick something else too...

Yea I only have dirt and facelift right now. I guess I should check out some other stuff. I really like the darker, slower stuff. Is Jar of Flies catchy or eery or something else? i guess I could go to youtube but that'd be lame.

JoF is their darkest, slowest, and most depressing offering by far. It's a 7 song acoustic EP that was written and recorded over the span of a week in the studio. It's absolutely brilliant, the band at their absolute finest hour.

This song sums up the entire 7 song EP perfectly.

All of their albums are so good I could never pick a favorite. By far my favorite rock band, maybe tied only with Staind.

Favorite songs...

Private Hell, No Excuses, Down In A Hole, Black Gives Way To Blue, Nutshell.

They're best when they're depressing. Isn't a new album on the way? I know Dead Winter would know.

I like Alice in Chains and all, but if I hear Man in the Box one more time on the radio I will drive the car into oncoming traffic to end the suffering.

As far as my favorite albums, add another vote for Jar of Flies. Check out the unplugged album too. If you like grunge, then go with the first few albums...

Dirt all the way if you want electric guitars. It's more powerful than Facelift and just as brooding as Jar of Flies. Dirt is quite possibly the greatest hard rock album of the 90's and one of the greatest hard rock albums of all time. It transcends grunge, metal, and rock...it is its own genre. No one has written a song as powerful as Would? since.

And yes, they've got a new album on the way...haven't heard it but I've heard it's great from the rumor mill.

The title track for Dirt is quite possibly the most intense self-loathing you will ever experience, and Junkhead, with its tongue-in-cheek middle finger to the anti-drug establishment, is hilariously awesome. I recommend the demo version of Junkhead if you wanna be blown away. The vocal mixing was done a little differently with a little more effect on the vocals in the lower thirds, and it's so good that I wish they had done the finished product in the same way. As for the song Dirt, the vocals on that song were so intense and seething with anger that you can feel it come right out of your speakers. Dirt, Superunknown, and Ten weren't albums...they were experiences.

And Dam that River? Find me ANY song by ANY mainstream band in the 90's with a riff as badass as that one. MAYBE Room a Thousand Years Wide or Outshined by Soundgarden. MAYBE.

Their self-titled album often gets overlooked, sadly. It's got some amazing songs on there and is even darker than Dirt. Songs like Brush Away, Again, and Frogs are capolavori.

I actually looked up JoF and it turns out I know quite a few of the songs. I will definitely be ordering it from amazon or wherever whenever I can. I might also get Ten as well because I have always loved that fucking album and never thought to purchase it because my girl has it.

If you don't have Badmotorfinger from Soundgarden, you don't know what you're missing. This album is straight up balls...heavy as fuck and Cornell's voice was never better. This one's a tossup between their Superunknown album and AIC's Dirt.

Eh, I could never compare Soundgarden to the likes of Alice In Chains.

Black Hole Sun is a very memorable tune, but even that couldn't convey the amount of emotion I get listening to AIC. Layne's voice was so much more personal, and Jerry's guitar playing was so much more haunting.

Dude, I'm telling you. Listen to Badmotorfinger. It's not as dark as AIC and of course AIC is my favorite band, but the raw power and emotion Chris Cornell conveyed was earth-shattering. Kim Thayil's guitar playing was weird and unorthodox and just unsettling, but it was awesome. They wrote amazing riffs.

Cornell sings on Right Turn on Sap and it's amazing. I wish they'd do something together again.

Check out Room a Thousand Years Wide. I linked it in the previous posts. "I walk in the cold sun and wiiiiiiind...ALL THESE YEAAARS WILL NOT BEGIIIIIIIIIIN!!!!!!!! Tomorrow begat tomorrow...tomorrow beGAT tomorrow....tomorrow begaaaaaaat tomorroooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!"
