OPETH Frontman: 'We've Never Jumped On Trends Or Chances To Make Money' - Sep. 5

I don't mean to look down upon your PhD in black metal, but I think black metal is garbage. To linger on a few words Mike said two years before the new album came out is idiotic. Be careful the light of black metal isn't a bug zapper, because you seem to be attracted to it as a fly would light...

    Opeth's song writing... naive???

I believe I read somewhere that Mike has never had any formal training. I've been playing guitar for 3-4 years and I can pretty much play any or all Opeth/Metallica/Slayer, etc. songs; I also took a music theory course in high school this year. I've never had any formal guitar lessons, but from...

    Sexiest Opeth man.

It's funny...none of these guys would be "sexy" if they weren't in a band.

So what other bands was Michael talking about???

I'm not sure what other bands he was refering to (or not..), but I think he means the tremolo picked, layered guitar sound (think the first minute or so of Advent, when both guitars come in) is what was being mass-produced. If you look at Deliverance or BWP, they use more power chords and full...

    Harvest Strumming

The fullyhardenedpunk guy would be the most accurate, but it still isn't very acurate. Strumming is easy, just follow the song by listending, but I'd recommend watching the Lamentations DVD for complete acuracy; that or any other bootleg of Harvest.

    You're first time.

My first Opeth experience was about two summers ago: I was up late one night because I couldn't sleep, so I started mindlessly scrolling through the channels. I ended up watching the terrible Headbanger's Ball show on MTV as what's his face was talking about Opeth and how they just released the...

    Sweep Picking

Both guitarists in Opeth will sometimes use sweep picking ( and yes, sweep picking is one fluid up and/or down motion or an arpeggio basically) often in their solos, especially Peter's solo (the second real solo, not tiny lead part) in The Leper Affinity. But Opeth don't sweep at the insane...

    Plz help me :(

    You bet.

    Plz help me :(

Most of it's on the mellotron, a sort of electric piano/keyboard effect.

    album complexity

I'd have to agree with Still Life and Black Water Park. Although I haven't learned any of the SL songs (yet), BWP is pretty complex. Hell, even songs like The Leper Afinity and The Drapery Falls are complex in themselves. They're not really difficult for me at least, but that all depends on...

    Easy Songs?

I know you've only been playing for three months, but another easy one, if you slowed it down that is, would be Deliverance. That should really help to build you endurance/dexterity for both hands and there are some relativly easy power chord riffs in it, like for example during the first solo.

    Easy Songs?

Ever try some Black Sabbath? That's some of the easiest shit out there. All Opeth songs are relatively easy, it's just the arrangements that seem difficult. I can't play every one, but try Patterns in the Ivy for a beginning song. The Drapery Falls and Forest of October are pretty easy as well.
