Compressing bass (before or after audio capture)

Hardware compression still annihilates plugin compression. That's why. If you are tracking with plugin compression, then just record it raw.

    Upgraded desktop, increased performance?

I'll bet that the processor upgrade wasn't that much of an upgrade. What was your before/after processor? How do they stack up here: www.cpubenchmark.net ? It's not really a surprise tbh, and if your version of Nuendo isn't utilizing all of the cores effectively, then it's really not a...

    Opinions on RME products

I'll agree that the preamps are shit (but what built in preamps aren't?), the AD conversion is subpar, but the DA conversion is actually pretty decent on the newer units. We are talking about their prosumer gear (FF400/800, UFX, etc) and not their high end stuff, never heard their "high end"...

FS: Golden Age Pre-73 and Comp-54 (US)

It's great stuff. I've never used a real 1073 or 2254 so I can't compare - but it definitely holds its own next to a 6176. Big improvement from stock RME preamps.

FS: Golden Age Pre-73 and Comp-54 (US)

Pre-73 MK1 with upgraded tantalum capacitors and a stock Comp-54 for sale. Comp-54 in like new condition and Pre-73 in great condition with a couple minor nicks in the paint on top of the faceplate - but you wouldn't see them if it was in a rack. Have original boxes for both. I'm selling so I...

    What to trust when listening?

I think you have the opposite problem of most people... I get my mix sounding awesome through my monitors, then I listen back through my pc speakers or my car and it sounds like crap. I could only wish that my mixes translated to sounding better on regular stereo setups and ipods.

    A/D converter upgrade

The difference between my RME Babyface and an Apogee ad16x was fairly significant. It's not the chip as much as the analog circuitry of the converter. The highs were higher and sweeter, the lows were lower and fuller, and the midrange was not as boxy. I'm talking something like a 5% difference -...

    What Bass Should I Buy?

The DI plays a HUGE role in the sound of the bass. The difference between my UA 610, GAP Pre-73, and stock RME instrument input is quite unbelievable to be honest. The UA is smooth, tubby, and almost synth-like, whereas the pre-73 is incredibly honky and agressive, while the RME ins. in is...

Just sharing some of my mixes from Fascination Street and my home studio

I think it just takes so much damn time to learn enough about making music and making music sound good, that you slowly start to realize that all of that time could have been spent doing something that actually paid worth a damn. What keeps us going is the dream that we'll "make it," however...

Do you let the 50/60Hz analog hiss on your plugs ?

I have enough tinnitus that the noise just annoys the hell out of me. Turn it off. Yes.

    D.I. Tracking Questions

The sansamp may have a DI out but it noticeably degrades the DI. I would reamp with the sansamp later if thats the sound you are looking to supplement the DI with.

    Something about guitar fizziness

I've gotten some very good tones with presence at 0 with several amps. If you put the mic on the dustcap, it's still going to be plenty bright. I wouldn't do it for fizzy buzzsaw metal guitars, but it really works well for some heavy rock stuff.

Music man stingray. How do less clank, more zing?

 Fresh ss strings will just piss him off more! It's really the nature of that fat ass humbucker they have.

AT4040 or 4050 for clean vocals?

Never used them but I hear they are quite sterile. Rode NTK and K2 might be worth looking into.
