1987

I prefer a lot of the smaller bands over the bigger bands anyway. I agree with you Troops if you sift thru you can find the bands. I like lots of different styles from 80s aor, prog, glam, hard rock power metal to the legendary bands like Priest Maiden Sabbath Zep. Theres lots of variety out there and I like that. Once upon a time I was more blinkered metal and although I am still a staunch metal head I listen to a broader range now within the style.

Troops- Straying from the topic - but have you heard the band HIM - Love Metal cd - kinda goth meets commercial hard rock. Recommeded

It's really down to one stupid ego though! The other guys still get along well from what I can gather.

Appetite influenced me more than any album since. It's what got me into rock music. Overrated? It's one of my "take to a desert island" albums. Perhaps you just had to be there at the time.

what do you mean had to be there at the time.....you were still young enough to be told by mum to stop picking your nose and to stop staring at the funny looking man!:p

I like gothic metal but HIM dont do anything for me. Id much rather listen to Entwine, Poisonblack, Charon, To/Die/For etc

I think you might be right about 'having to be there at the time' Winnie. Kinda the same as Nirvana in a way, it was more the movement than the actual music that made them legendary, and the music became respected and liked, for that reason. Again, I think Appetite is good and has some awesome stuff on it, but as I said, I don't think it lives up to it's reputation of one of the best ever rock albums.

Then again, I might be way off. :)

Yeah I think Appetite is definitely an album that many would hold dear because of the memories associated with it. The same thing happens with KISS albums, bcause I wasn't alive in the '70s I find it hard to understand why people would think Love Gun & Dynasty are better albums than Crazy Nights & Asylum!

I still think it is one of the best ever by the way. But by best ever I mean top 50, not top 5!

Well the GNR Greatest Hits actually is a 'greatest hits' rather than a best of. It's basically all the singles (or most of them). It's not something you'd actually get if you already have their albums. They only made four albums not including the live CD, so it's not that hard to get all their stuff. The only non-album track on there is 'Sympathy for the Devil' so it's hardly an essential release.

Can someone explain what goth metal is? If there is a thing?

I know i labelled HIM as goth meets hard rock.

Id label Sisters of Mercy goth but not really metal. Type O Negative gets the goth tag thrown in a bit too. Then so does Evanesance or however you spell it? Nothing alike.

Musical style or visual?

Maybe just the gothic vibe/attitude/image can get "goth" attached to any style I guess. I know The Deadthings have been referred to as "goth glam" even. If there can be such a thing as goth glam then anything is possible!

I mean I got into GnR in the late 80s as a result of Appetite, which set my course in life musically. As opposed to 90% of the people at Eastern Creek and Calder Park in 1993, who probably hadn't heard of them before the UYI albums, save perhaps having heard Sweet Child O' Mine on the radio. Appetite was awesome partly because of how it made people like myself feel when it was the latest thing out, as opposed to hearing it after the UYI albums.

:)

Oh, and the greatest hits thing sounds like as big a piece of shit as the Alice In Chains one, so I won't be buying it either. :)
