1987

I'd say Appetite is far from over-rated, but I'm a big fan of big things. I seem to be different to a lot of people on these boards in the fact that I like the more popular side of things than bothering to delve deeper. I think Appetite is one of my top 5 albums of all time.

I'm bored so I'll list my top 5:

1. Led Zeppelin - IV
2. Metallica - Master of Puppets
3. Metallica - Ride the Lightning
4. Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction
5. Chris Vrenna - American McGee's Alice (score)

But I hardly would think that Appetite is MASSIVE ahead of the UYI, I'm a big fan of both (with the second one being a tad better than the first)

I'm not sure if this post is on topic at all, but oh well :D

and the whole goth thing...

I'm not sure what goth metal is, but I know Type O Negative are one of my 3 favourite bands and they get labelled 'goth metal' so I'm all for it!

gothic metal has a dark atmosphere, mood and yeah a lot of gothic metal band (not all) do have the whole gothic image happenin.

Sisters Of Mercy are one of the pioneers of the gothic rock scene in the 80's, though definitely not metal, a lot of the gothic metal bands are influenced by them and other gothic rock bands such as Fields Of The Nephilim and Bauhaus.

Basically gothic metal is just like gothic rock except heavier. They use keyboards to create an atmosphere and feature misery filled vocals.

Type O Negative is for sure gothic metal. Very dark. But with Evanesence I wouldn't call them gothic at all. just pop-hard rock. Just because a band has a female vocalist who happens to wear gothic fashion doesn't make their music gothic.

Unfortunately many bands get labelled 'gothic' just because that is what the band choose to wear (ie. Evanesence) but to be labelled gothic metal correctly it is all about the music (dark, sombre etc) not fashion.

I love the popular stuff too but I also like to delve deeper coz otherwise I'd miss out on tons of other great stuff! I get bored only listening to a few albums over and over so I want more to hear! It's definitely worth delving deeper especially when it comes to hard rock coz there is sooo much good stuff out there. Though tons of the albums I do consider to be better than Appetite do happen to be big ones anyway (Slippery When Wet, 1987, Hysteria, Skid Row, etc). But then there's also lesser known stuff, some in a very similar vein to Appetite too, that definitely stands up to it and is just as good imo.

And yep, UYI2 is definitely better than 1! :) I scored a Use Your Illusion tour shirt for $1 today hahah! I'd gotten one before for $3 but it was too big for me and it was the Coma one which looks crap. This is the one with a dirty skull and Guns N Roses written very rock & roll on it and it fits me!

What a score for $1! Haha!

the best music is usually not easily accessable. you have to delve deeper.

NP. Orange Goblin 'Lazy Mary'

yeah i think Drac Times is great but i find it hard to call paradise lost goth. Sure they changed after One Second which i think is a mamoth album too. I would actually like to hear more of the new Paradise Lost stuff but haven't had a chance to. Huge sellers in Germany apparently?

That doesn't mean very much. Just about anything even remotely metal sells well in Germany. They have the biggest market for heavy metal in the world.

The little I have heard didn;t sound very metal at all. Very different. Im sure the old PL fans would hate it. Im curious to hear more.

I liked One Second a lot. But I could understand the old fans turning off - thats why I was suprized PL had done so well with sales in Germany (harder core metal fans there but sounds like a new audience for them grew there)

One Second took me a long time to get into, but eventually I came around to loving it. I just haven't bothered with much of their stuff after that.
