I just bought a second hand EMG 81 from a friend, and i'm now trying to put it in but it didn't come with the Pot's (tone and volume..).

Question 1 :i don't realy need the TonePot but can i just go without? i was told i could do so...

Question 2 on this subject: I also didn't get a Volume Pot with it. and my current guitar has 500K ohm Pot and i think i need a 250K ohm right?
or could i just put the EMG on the 500K ohm one?

Now to my other question:

DFH 2 can't find samples when loading a kit.. what the hell is wrong an has anyone else had this?

THANKS!!

1-2. The EMGs use special pots, so you need at least the EMG volume pot.

You need to set the path to the samples, read the manual, and make sure you install the latest updates from ToonTrack.

thanks man, you could be right on the DFH i'm on it!!

and they realy use the special pots? what is different if i may ask?

I'm an idiot with electronics, but I do know that when you install EMGs you have to use their pots. They say so in the manual, go grab the PDF at their website!

1. You don't need the tone pot.

2. You CAN use standard pots with an EMG. It'll sound the same, it just won't react like a normal volume knob. It'll act more like an on/off switch. (0-5 will be almost off, 5-10 will sound nearly identical).

I've done this plenty of times before, and will be doing it again tonight when my Air Norton comes in.

What is different about the pots is the resistance. 25k instead of 500k to accomodate the low impedance that EMG's have.

Thanks for the info. On/off is kind of undesireable in my opinion, but whatever you're into I guess LOL.

yeah, indeed i didn't know either!!

i will be using this guitar for hi gain stuff in the studio only... so not to worry about the on/off thing right?

You know, I just did it, and Forget about the On/Off thing...it works basically the same. Maybe a bit more gain at the lower volume levels, but it's worth it to get that killer passive neck tone. 85/Air Norton kicks ass.

This is true. I always ditch the tone pot. Not because I don't use it (I never touch it), but because with it disconnected, it, to me, makes the pickups a little clearer. It may just be the added brightness that makes it sound that way, but it sounds less muddy to me. I do it with all my pickups.

man i kind of wish mine didnt have the pot because my hand hits the volume nob all the time when i play because its right where i rest my pinky. if it had less resistance it wouldnt be as much as a problem. damn

You probably have a Jackson dinky or something like it, right?

Put a felt washer or three between the knob and the face of the guitar, round the pot end that sticks out. It'll make it much harder to accidentally hit.

*edit* I just realized you're from the band Abigail Williams....I was just listening to you guys last night on myspace. Fucking amazing stuff, for sure. Really really like the style you guys have going; almost like Black Dahlia meets Eurometal, but even cooler. Let me know when you guys plan to tour south CA!
