2x12 vs 4x12 for recording

I' ve never had any experience with a 2x12 for recording purposes, now that at home I have a free room I am thinking to get one 2x12 for recording, since 4x12 would be too loud.
I have in studio a mesa recto 4x12, and I alaways tracked metal stuff through 4x12, what would be the difference on 2x12?
Also any suggestion in models? I was thinking on something different than mesa but with v30..

I've had good experiences with Bogner 2x12s in the past. Running an Ecstasy through one gave me both my best rock rhythm and lead sounds, with a single sm57.
