Here are a few audio extracts of heavy guitars, recorded in the studio, during a short microphone test session, with the following gear :
GUITAR : Gibson Les Paul Custom
AMP : Peavey 5150 Mk1, with meds a little scooped (we tried to keep a sufficient amount of them, which is proper to the Les Paul sound), bass and treble boosted a bit.
CAB : Randall
MICS : SM57 2 centimeters from the HP cone, a little excentred and inclined ;
MD421 in the same position, in front of the down-right HP ; Royer R121 just in front of the SM57 HP ; C414 TL2 1,50 m from the cab, pointing the center of the cab ; Soundelux U95, 3 meters from the cab, 30 cm above the ground, pointing the center.
MIC PRES : API 512c for every mic, except the U95, which was run into a 512b.
CONVERTERS : MOTU HD192 (without the BigBen clock we now have)
All the tracks were played 2 times and panned at the extreme right and extreme left into Logic.
I do not have any pics of the session, so that doesn't mean a lot for you, but I think it's always enjoyable to listen to these kinds of tests.
When mixing the song from which those extracts belong to, I decided to keep only the 57, Royer and MD421.
