anyone ever tried this? I use the sonic maximizer for my live set up and looooove it! doubles the balls, but I have yet to try it in a recording. I would imagine there might be too much bass...

I'd wager that that maximizer isn't needed in your rig, either ;)

I think basically you are using it as an EQ rather than it's true intended use. I doubt you'll find much love for the "sonic maximizer in a guitar rig" idea around these parts.

Word.

I've heard a lot of great guitar tones live from guys that used them. most the the time a 5150 or 6505.... or both. Plea for Purging uses them. both guitarists run through a 5150 AND 6505 into 4 mesa cabs, so there are 8 guitar cabs and 4 heads on stage when they play. it's nuts.

I must say though, most of the time bands use them, they also use an EQ.

5105 = 6505 though
Sounds like what they do really is overkill.

+ They're probably balancing their EQ to counteract the effect of the Sonic Maximizer. So it gets back sounding good.

Unfortunately, it seems there is a mentality that more gear = better tone. I'd say quality beats quantity by far. :D

every band I've heard that has used one has had waaay too much much low and high end in the guitars, as that's pretty much the only areas the maximizer affects in a guitar rig. It's use is quite a bit different than simply boosting those areas, though, which is why it always puzzled me to see them in rigs. Just get an EQ and call it a day.

I've played a few shows with them, most of the cabs are dummies, unless they've chaged their setup. Great band though, love the fire breathing.

me too man. my band played with em 3 times if I remember right. twice in Ohio and once when we were on tour in Arizona. I think I know at least 4 of the 8 cabs are legit. most of the time we played with them they only used 4 cabs total due to venue size. I thought they had great tone live. it was very dark sounding. the tone almost sounded the same standing off to the side of the cab than it did directly in front. they really knock off the highs. I loved it.

how'd you like their drummer's 20x28 kick drum? haha. that thing is so ridiculous!

the concept of a BBE makes sense on paper, but not in real life. It slightly delays certain frequencies (specifically the lows) a fraction of an instant so that they hit the speakers in a manner that more efficiently let's the lows and highs come out. But this isn't how a guitar cab is supposed to sound!! In fact just about everyone here that uses a TS does so to achieve just the opposite, tightening up the mids. Especially in a live set up, your guitar (and the mix of the enitire band) is more clear if the guitar frequencies are sitting where they're supposed to be and not trying to gobble up every frequency in the spectrum. The BBE is just counterproductive. It's like when we mix, we hipass/lowpass guitars very hard for a reason, and it's not to make them sound "weak" or "small".

This was like 3 years ago, his kit was shite back then. Their tone was very midrangy from what I remember.
