5150....too dark?

hey guys.


I was looking for a smooth dark tone for doubletracked guitars (think KSE-EOHA etc)

what do you think, is this way too dark or could it work?

Personally I really love that tone, but its hard to say how well it would sit in the mix.

I heard this on HCAF and liked it pretty well. I wonder how well defined it would sound for certain types of metal. Even the style played on the clip might benefit from more presence for defining the faster parts?

I wanna hear it with drums, I think it would be WAY easier to tell. I like it so far though.

Sounds good on its own but will most probably sound muddy in a mix.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to tell on it's own, but I think it might use some more brightness in the highs when used in a mix.

holy crap, sounds good man! typical 5150 sound to it, it is a bit dark, but that's no disadvantage in my opinion.

Bit too dark - I think clarity/note definition would get lost in a full mix. Killer starting point though, shit.

It definitely needs some high-freqs enhance. Don’t be afraid to boost that knob, you’ll need those extra highs to make it cut thru the mix.

Recently while trying out my new guitar I started out with quite a dark (a bit muddy, too) tone and it just didn't sound right: mp3 A
I did end up with a nice result by processing it
mp3 B
but it would have been better if I'd just used different settings.

sounds good man. all depends on how the drums are mixed how they sound. the sound of the drums and guitar definitely need to be suited for each other for any tone to work. look forward to hearing the results!

I like it a lot, but I agree, if you want "the perfect mix", you probably need less low frequencies. I'd like to hear it in a mix and work on making it work. I'm sure you could do it with a bit of effort. Keep us posted on your results!
