8x10s or 2 4x10s

I am getting a new bass cab and really want to get an 8x10 Hartke hydrive.
However space is a massive issue for me and if I could split that into 2 4x10s without the sound suffering then that would be ideal.

Is there a massive discernible difference between playing through 2 4x10s compared to an 8x10?

an 8x10 is a fucking nightmare. Unless you're touring with roadies... 2 4x10's is a WAY better way to go,

IMO with 4x10's your always carrying, with an 8x10 your wheeling most of the time, so 8x10 all the way!

Two 4x10's. Or like 006 said, 4x10 and 1x15. Seriously, most venues the 4x10 will push just fine. My 350 watt Hartke head sits on top of a 4x10, and most shows I'm told to turn it down when the volume hasn't even broke past two.

Is there any real difference in tone between the 2 setups though?

I figure at least with 2 4x10s, I can choose to leave one at home if the venue isn't as big and in all honesty i don't have a van atm so an 8x10 would be fuckin' difficult to cart around.

I have been using a 4x10 and 1x15 setup at my bigger gigs and I do enjoy the BIG low end it produces but whenever I have played through an 8x10 it seems to give me exactly the kind of sound I need.

Has anyone had any experience with the hydrives? I know Dave Ellefson and Frank Bello seem to swear by them and I am i love the tone those guys get.

In all seriousness, I've toured with 4x12's (same size as the 8x10 but lighter) and multiple 8x10's as well as single 4x10's and the unwritten benefit of the bigger cab is that it's a a two man job. Really you should be going one per side on 4x12 and 4x10's but lots of guys don't . In my experience as a bass player and occasional roadie, you're way more likely to get hurt "manning" a 4x than sharing the 8x.
And they sound different.
The only time I regret my big cab is when I have to carry it up the stairs at home but that's pretty rare. If I had to deal with that all of the time I'd go smaller but for touring I much prefer the bigs.

TBH I am constantly having to cart my stuff from A to B which is why I am thinkin 4x even though there is always someone there to help. Additionally my missus is already pissed off at the lack of space we have due to my home studio so I think a sweet 8x10 soaking up the already diminishing space we have would be her breaking point as well as it being quite tough to get into the back of a ford mondeo with a marshall 4x12, heads and guitars. At least with 2 4x10s I can crack my rig in half and still be alright.
