My friend Darren has a nice deal with the Cultural Center of Spain. They allow him free concerts in their place (a extremely small venue) only if the bands sing is Spanish.
Darren has discovered that many bands are eager for an opportunity to get known and even for free the place is right. Moreover some bands has achieved their own "cult" status of followers and usually people show in decent numbers to the place. The shows are held always the last Friday night of the month which allows anyone to go.
Yesterday Darren held a special concert at a "bigger venue" (~150 people) for six bands of the Farolito at a ludicrous price (< $6) and people showed like crazy! I was at ticketing and we got a nice revenue, more considering that another festival was held (from ska to metal) and that Mago de Oz (the horrible pop-metal Spanish band) was sold out in another venue (~6000 tickets I've told unconfirmed).
The special thing for me nevertheless was that Trival the band of my good friend Henry played a very special night since for the last song Rober Dean (former guitar of Japan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Dean) showed and played with them. Was also damn funny that since they play an alternative/progressive rock type of thing their main guitar was wearing a Slayer t-shirt , and the keyboardist for the last song believed he was Keith Emerson and shook the syntheziser so heavily that finally it hits the floor and broke two keys...and he was giddy as hell!
It was very neat to see an old guy like Rob playing flawlessly after all these years considering he's doing birdwatching in a remote park nowdays. I know that for Henry at least was a magical night playing with someone he has the albums and always revere for had playing with Robert Sylvian in Japan.
