A different tone for the left kick?

How would you go about tuning and processing? Currently I try to match both up as much as possible but I believe a different tone may help bring out a lot more clarity.

Drummer recording with two kick drums huh? Euch. Personally I would just pan them both centre and make them sound the same. Kicks on either side of the stereo field must sound weird as hell and only really serves to satisfy the drummers ego.

it really depends on what's being played, panning them like 5% would probably be ok, panning them 90%
is going to sound really strange ;) soundwise, a little difference can be nice, but just really little, like using
two kick drums, same model, same new skins and stuff, same mic, but still a little natural difference.
But that's just my opinion and I am still using just one in the centre 99,9999% of the time.

Differences are going to be inevitable unless you sample replace them with the same sample. I would NOT try to make them sound different! Try to get them to sound as similar as possible, there will still be minor differences (hopefully positive for your recording)

yea i would do everything possible to get the same tone from each kick

however...i would say to experiment with panning them out a little, as well. like someone else said, having 2 kicks panned about 5% L/R not only gives some more depth and realism to the kit, but clears up the middle a little for other shit

If I ever will record 2 kick drums, I wouldn't try to make them different. But if different than little offset in EQ and if something in stereo than mono low end and stereo highs 5 - 10%.

To everyone saying pan it 5%-10% apart, just keep it CENTER. I play drums and have a 2 kick set-up so believe me, I deal with this all the time! I've tried it, tried it again, tried tricking myself into liking it, and overall it just sounds wrong. Seems like a good idea when you say it, but in the real world it sounds like you're trying to bring attention to the kicks too much.

Are the kick patterns REALLY that groundbreaking? The odds are really against that. People will only hear it as an obnoxious effect that no one else uses (with good cause).

like I said, I almost never do it, but I recorded a more proggy song I wrote 3 years ago and it
didn't sound that bad, but I am not sure, maybe that was the only time I ever did it :D
too bad that I don't have any recordings left from that time...would be quite interesting.

What, you're not going to trigger the kit in the first place?

One trigger for each kick, but I've also borrowed a pair of re20's for the heck of it, and because I wasn't charged :Spin:

Always center, never tried otherwise. The kick work isn't horrifyingly fast and all but got a lot of groove and variation to it. The drummer's a big Neil Peart fan so...

I'll try sampling the kit for you guys. It's a Death/Thrash album by the way.
