I see what you mean. I'm new to both bands, so I understand now.
I have seen this happen with some of my favorite bands. They tend to called it "growning" that all good, but when it changes the sound & dierction of the band dramaticly? I can see the "hardcore" or longtime fans point of view...
What Night wish discs from the past would you suggest?

I'll suggest to check like I did, in chronological order. "Angel Fall First", if it's works then "Oceanborn", if that click then "Wishmaster". Then stop there.

As a die-hard fan I have followed them for two more albums, and frankly unless (like Helloween after "Chameleon") they see the error in their ways it won't be a next one.

P.S. I warn you, that you must dig female operatic voices and Euro power metal high on keyboards, otherwise don't even try the band further. Of course if you can make it to SS I'll be more than glad to supply you with the material
