I repeatedly see the term nu-metal here and was wondering what kind of bands you mean by it.

I'm not that ignorant usually, but I do not really see the need to classify metal into different types.

well, I always considered nu-metal to mean rap-metal 'cause it's the nu trendy thing to do. Some people expand it to include anything that is popular, which I think is rather silly. As for classifying things, I really feel it is helpful because it helps to get a decent feel for a band before you're able to listen to them. Like, if someone says they play bay area thrash, I can expect something like Testament or Forbidden, and expecting that would make the music more enjoyable. If I was expecting Dream Theater, and got Cannibal Corpse because we had no way to linguistically differentiate them, I would probably be really pissed and dislike the band more just because I was expecting something else. But that's just my opinion, which of course is the most important one to me :)

Would nu-metal be something like American Head Charge?

I don't even get how people classify some things, I think a lot of its just random. Death metal is obvious, but what would Slayer be, or Sepultura. I know things like Iced Earth and Testament are thrash only because they say they are.

My meaning for term "NuMetal":
Is the bands that followed in the success of bands like KORN(who are very original), meaning band wagon jumpers who imitate successful artists type of sound. These bands are numerous, & get the airplay, just because their music sounds alot like other already successful NuMetal bands. Thus creating a whole new music type. Just like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana, & Pearl Jam, did to create Alternative music. When they became big, it opened the door for alot of "copycats", that wanted to cash in on an already formed "fanbase". Which has always been the case through Rock'N Roll history. But I think you need to classify
types of Metal, there are just to many, different styles, not to. And I agree with Jimbobhickville, from Deamtheater to Cannibal Corpse is a wide gap, that needs classification. Just like insects do..............................................................................................

as I understand it nu-metal is stuff like P.O.D.,korn,linkin park, papa roach, deftones and those kind of bands that play some kind of hard rock combined with shitty vocals.
some of those bands actually have metal backgrounds, like samael, testament, sepultura,at the gates, yet they play the shittiest music of them all

I would agree with all of those except Slipknot. I love slipknot, but then again, I'm a drummer, not a guitarist or bassist. I admit the guitarists and bassist don't play well at all. And Joey is incredible.

I let other people break my music into categories. If I like it, I listen to it. To hell with the people that classify metal as "Nu", "Death", "Speed", "Black", etc. I love my old Slayer, but I also love my American Head Charge. I take 'em one by one.

When Korn's first album came out I played the hell out of it cause it was a new sound - it was original. But since that album there have been a ton of cock rock copy cats...Limp Bizkit, Stained, etc. I think a good album is one that you can listen to 10 years from now and not be embarrased to say that you bought it.

There are some solid hardcore bands out there that have managed to fall into the category of Nu Metal more because of who they tour with, their label, or when they put out their album.

Some good nu metal bands out there IMO (they're considered Nu Metal atleast) are Nothingface, Mudvayne, and Fear Factory.

:headbang:

From what I gather about the definition of nu-metal, I don't see how anyone could consider Fear Factory it. I think they have a really original sound, and don't consider them copying anyone.

I don't really know. Maybe rapmetal = nu-metal from my perspective. I can't stand rapping, it just does not fit metal IMO. But I don't really care so much about genre definitions, I know what I like and that should be enough for anybody.

????????? Iced Earth is not thrash metal!
Just because some places, like audiogalaxy, call them that doesn't mean they are. They have a few thrashy songs but overall they are not trash.

hahhaaha!! of course it ain't..:D

maybe in old songs there's influnce of thrash
but nowadays,
with their slow begginings and very melodic sound
it's closer to heavy-progressive
but still we can see thrash rhytms at drums
that's all..

am I wrong?

Iced Earth is power metal, not the European anthemic type, but the American style. They have very little thrash and really no prog elements.

I agree genres can be overused, but they are helpful in many instances. I listen to stuff from most metal genres, but if I'm in the mood for finding a new prog band, I'd like to know what bands are prog, same goes for thrash, power, death, technical, etc.

If Iced Earth isn't thrash then it only proves my point. Someone will say they are but noone ever says why.

I don't like Horrow Show at all. I think they lyrics aren't well written for Iced Earth, and all the songs kind of sound the same. I just bought Dark Saga and it is the same problem. On Dark Saga, there are only a few songs that really stick out and are memorable, namely Slave to the Dark and especially A Question of Heaven. I think Something Wicked was a better cd than both.

I am not even going to discuss Slipknot anymore, because none of you seem to listen to me, and because I don't care that much. They're not my favorite band.

power??
oo, you're right
I think about hammerfall, helloween, running wild, pegazus etc..

I haven't heard u.s. style a lot
but ýced e. have too compact bass sound and
trebles are less for power
strange..
is u.s. style so?

and still I'm thinkin that they have prog. elements
maybe its cause is just matt's vocals..

may I say that it's crossover??
