So, here we have Abiotic from Miami, FL. They spent 3 days with us and did one song just to get out there. We'll be doing their EP as well.

- Live drums (sample replaced of course, but I took samples of the kit and the Kick/SNR both are about 50% his kick and snr sound blended with a few other samples. M/S room mic (Royer 121 and V69 Mogami)

- GTRs are 6505 > Mesa OS boosted with...... I don't remember. LOL. OD820 I think? My usual mic setup: 57+421 thru Trident S20. They had 2 Agile 7-strings (w/EMG's) one with an 18v mod and one without. We A/B'd. 18v sounded WAY better. Very akin to Phil's Ibanez Prestige with EMG's.

- Bass was a Warwick, finger player. DI in. Kind of a PITA to deal with.

- Vox was a SM7 with the windscreen off and lowcut engaged > 1073 style pre with judicious EQ then off to a 160a. 4:1, LOTS of GR on the way in. Probably pushing 15db of GR at points.

That's it! Lot's of VCC on here and blah blah.

Love it or hate it, but you still know it's heavy. =D

*puts on diaper*

alright, let's have a listen.

critiques: i don't like the up-front snare on the fast parts...the body of it sorta covers everything else too much, but it sounds epic on the slower/heavier parts. all of the drums sound a bit electronic and "one sample-ish" if yanno what i mean. and i can hear alot of extraneous amp noise.

couldja tell us a bit about the mid/side set up? isn't the v69 a super cheap mic o_-? did you just throw it on there for it's omni-abilities? and howja encode it in the DAW?

thanks bro! i was kind of going for the slammin' drum sound and a lot of the kick/snr sound is one shots layered on top of some more dynamic Slate stuff thru trigger.

amp noise is the bass. it was a nightmare. finger player, amazing talent, but I left it because the rest of the mix is so.... technical and clinical at times, so in my mind, the noise reminds you that people are actually playing, haha.

M/S stereo room is fucking the best thing in the WORLD.

It's either the V69 or 67. It actually sounds great. It's the Mogami edition LDC Tube mic. It's cardiod, and then the R-121 is figure 8, SO:

you have the mogami like 6ft back from the kit just above the kick drum, front and center. the royer is positioned on TOP, with the capsules as CLOSE as you can get it to the mogami and most importantly, the royer is aimed to pick up the left and right while the mogami gets the center image.

it's easy to encode. i have the mogami track and the royer track i duplicate (both channels recording the same information) so i'm recording the royer to two tracks right off the bat..... then, all you gotta do is pan the two royer tracks L & R, invert the phase on ONE and group the two tracks together so I can raise or lower the amount of stereo information.

i usually also have a stereo pair of room mics further back but I didn't have enough inputs for this particular drum setup.

the mix itself is pretty awesome man !
but do a favour and turn down the limiter in the master because the whole song is clipping and smashed

if you wanna go for that sound - do that in mixing stage then in mastering stage you wont need this annoyning smashing

for some reason, I like that smashed sound. it may be too smashed in this case, but notice how all the transients are actually fairly well conserved for how loud this fucking master is.

as for clipping, i don't hear a whole lot of it but I know it's there.

It's a constant battle =D

Thanks guys!

And I agree, the SNR verb was a last minute addition and I didn't think to automate it down during the fast bits, I was more concerned with the awesome beef and air it was adding to the snare sound.

Yeah, the verb itself sounds fucking sick and adds a whole 'nother level of nasty to the snare.

Just curious, any info on the verb you used?

4 different verb. Z4 from slate, TC M300 (medium room), Lexicon VintPlate, and a stock Nuendo reverb that happened to fucking rule.

Fun Fact: LEAD HI & LO Vox all went through this chain after tracking w/the above processing:

(different settings for LO's and HI's) OD820 > 1073 EQ w/the transformer beyond slammed just below the threshold of nasty clipping > 160a at 8:1 doing another 15db GR =D

LO & HI LR Vox were all ITB processing (besides the eq/comp I did on the way in)

hitting the vox with an OD ... and then vulgar quantities of smashing on the way in:guh:?! i love it. these are some delectable tidbits you've shared with us on this one!

that's probably the most i've ever shared concerning my inner sanctum of mixing treats and total strange shit. I never do the same thing twice though, so I guess it doesn't matter. Haha. Well, I never do the same thing twice about 70% of the time.

I DID like how the vox sounded after I thought of trying the above chain so it could be a go to! =D

for me it's a little bit too much compression...it's just smashed
but great mix and song :)

=D thanks man! i need to find a way to get my mixes as exciting and massive as I want them to be without having to compress/limit as much. I just don't 'feel' it when it's not loud as fuck and smashing your face.

hmmm...

hmmm...

hehehe I got the same problem sometimes hehe
Especially when I take Decapitated "Day 69" as a reference mix:)

good thing is: with every mix I learn more and more and get to my desired level of violence faster.

my goal is to really master the art of 'controlled violence'. yes, my shit may sound smashed but to me, that's what is giving it a lot of character and aggression.

think: Tue Madsen

i don't use references at all when mixing, but most of my stuff is very akin sonically to Tue's stuff.... THAT mofo smashes the SHIT out of his mixes.
