About to go get a CD

No, because you say recommending them is a bad thing even though it is your opinion. Yet much more people enjoy the music, your opinion does not count for the entire forum.

Also you cannot deny that they are one of the most inspirational and successful death metal bands ever. Being one of the true pioneers also.

Oh. I suppose I should've put a 'to me' after that 'make sense' then, in case some prat can't work out that I'm expressing an opinion.

Death are nothing like as important as people suggest.

I just think it's best that you try not to put someone off a band before they actually get to listen and judge it for themself.

Oh and Melodeath someone stated Monstrosity - Imperial Doom, I suggest getting In Dark Purity instead. It is their best work and Imperial Doom is out of print now if i'm not mistaken?

At the Gates – With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness (just for the first half)
WTF. I don't get these "second half is mega super teh suck" sentiments any longer. The first half is more immediate but towards the end there's BLOOD OF THE FUCKING SUNSETS!, "Stardrowned", and "The Burning Darkness". The only truly weak track there is "Through the Red," and even that is better than just about all of SoTS combined. No. Don't listen to this person. WFIKTBD is excellent almost throughout the entire thing. "The Red in the Sky is Ours" is still better in every aspect except lyrics though -- WFIKTBD happens to have some of the very finest lyrics ever written.

Please, let's drop the Death arguments for today.

People have recommended almost everything I would have.

Except:

Machine Head - Through the Ashes of Empires
Sepultura - Arise
Akercocke - Choronzon
Amon Amarth - Once Sent from The Golden Hall
Mercyful Fate - Melissa
Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales
Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence

It's not awful, it's just nowhere near as good as the first half. Don't get me wrong, it's still miles and miles better than SOTS. There's just no connection from one idea to the next, it's almost like the band lost their sense of purpose and just stuffed some riffs together. It's also just quite boring and generic. People were forewarned about the abomination they'd later become by the annoying second-rate speed metal riffs that could so easily have been rejected by Slayer. The Burning Darkness is a nice song, but it's so ridiculously simple. Blood of the Sunsets is hardly anything special, it sounds rather generic to me. Through the Red does suck a lot. It just doesn't hold my interest at all. I can listen to the first half over and over, entranced by its genius, but when the rest comes along it doesn't move me one bit.

See, I don't get that. I like the second half. Then again, I also like SOTS. Simplicity has never been a downside with me, I guess.

Simplicity... I think not. Compare "Blood of the Sunsets" to "Raped by the Light of Christ" then tell me which is simpler. "Beyond Good and Evil" is pretty "simple" (that is, simple for being early AtG) too and has plenty of speed metal riffing. I, also, prefer the first half, but only by a small bit -- I really don't see large differences in composition in the later tracks.

Raped by the Light of Christ is a beautiful, epic song, while Blood of the Sunsets is quite boring. Beyond Good and Evil isn't that good, the four songs after it are the real highlights.

You'll note that I only mentioned simplicity when referring to The Burning Darkness. However, a disjointed composition made up of second-rate melodies is always going to be simpler than something less bland, though not necessarily technically.

"Millenium" is just as good.

I cant believe you recommend Reinventing the Steal and Far Beyond Driven!!!! FBD is a cool album but any selfrespecting Pantera fan knows Vulgar Display of Power and Cowboys From Hell blow anything else they did out of the water. Reinventing the Steel was a major let down after The Great Southern Trendkill. In fact RtS is pretty much shit.
I hate Cowboys From Hell because they obviously ripped off Exhorder in some of the songs. I love Vulgar Display of Power but the starter of the thread has it already so I didnt write it. And I dont get why people dont like Reinventing The Steel. Come on, it has that It Makes Them Disappear song in it.

I recommend Nailbomb - Point Blank

so you think the songs on "the red in the sky..." are better than WFIKTBD except for the lyrics?

oh an someone suggest Atheist - Unquestionable Presence. If you look in my list, I already have it.

The lyrics are great in both albums (although probably superior on With Fear...). The Red in the Sky... is certainly better overall than With Fear..., but I like tracks 2-5 on With Fear... more than anything on The Red in the Sky....

EDIT: NOTHING by Machine Head is a Metal classic. Fuck that band, and fuck everything that sounds like them.
You should stop feltching, it would make your thought process much clearer. Machine Head sucks, I agree, but their first album is great, EVRERYTHING ELSE BUY THEM IS NULL AND VOID. If you would stop being a closed minded little bitch you would like music for what it is, music, not a fucking competition.
