Any suggestions for a nice sounding (and looking) acoustic at that price range? The sound I like is a pop/rock sound. I don't like anything vintage sounding. My ideal tone is Metallicas Mama Said, you know a big, full spectrum sound. I know that they used a really expensive Martin guitar for that but I'm looking for something close for a bit less money.

Has anyone tried the Ibanez AWS1000ECE, it looks awesome but how does it sound?

I adore my Mom's Tacoma - entirely flamed-Koa body, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard, and made in the USA for around $700.

Thanks for the replies guys, it's really hard to decide since I know nothing about acoustic guitars. I guess buying over the internet is out of the question, I'll just have to see what's available in stores and try them out. I found a really nice sounding guitar, a Furch durango. Unfortunately it's not pretty. I'm not going to get any chicks playing that thing hahaha  It sounds expensive, but it has to look expencive too

About Martins - I'm really really wary to buy one since they don't have a fucking adjustable truss rod, that seems like a recipe for disaster given the climate where I am (lower New York)

Hmm, my Martin is perfectly intonated and set up great...and it came that way. Got it about 4-5 years ago. I actually have the one I posted about above. And I live in Ohio FWIW.

I personally like the Taylor GS series...has that low end that some taylors tend to not have (they're kind of bright sounding guitars, but you can change that with strings.) The GS is out of your range though, but maybe you'll play one and fall in love with it and figure out how to get one = P

Otherwise there is a brand out there that I just found and was really surprised with them. Silver Creek guitars are SOLID WOOD guitars, not the laminated stuff, and they're 300 bucks or less. My friend got one and I was really surprised at how they sounded. The biggest thing with those is to just get new strings as the stock ones are pretty bad.

I have a L'Arrivee I'm thinking of selling. Reasonably bright sounding (more "modern" than my girlfriend's Martin, say), and has two internal pickups, a stereo out jack, and a Fishman blender preamp. And a trussrod!

Yamaha makes some killer acoustics. I use a CPX-15 and it's great. The only acoustic I've played that had a really good feel like an electric. I got it for $800 USD with a case.
Here's a crappy video demo I did of it:

I like Alvarez stuff too, cheaper price, but good sound and playability.
I've yet to play a Martin I've liked and I don't understand why people pay out the ass for them.

Thank you guys for all the replies. I have decided to buy a Tanglewood TW1000SRH, I played it in a store and it was awesome. It costs about 1070 € (1680 $) here in sweden, but I know the guy at the musicstore so I will get it a little cheaper. Still it's a lot more expensive than I intended but I can manage, I'll just quit partying this month :kickass:
