Harsh EBM, Gothic Metal, and Black Metal vocals, it sounds like it really shouldn't work but as we all know The Kovenant, The CNK, and T3chn0ph0b1a have been peddling this blend with some degree of success for a few years now in different forms, though all similarly keeping to the metal structure while using the electronics heavily but still as embellishments. Ad Inferna seem to becoming at it from a different angle – the songs feature the heavy electronics in a more central role, but the metal guitars don't seem to have been an afterthought either. This is surprising to me because the first Ad Inferna album L’Empire Des Sens fell very comfortably into the Melodic Black Metal drawer. Basically what I'm getting at is, this is pretty much 50/50 Electronic Body Music and Metal... it's EBMetal...
First thing is first. This is one of those albums that is either going to hit the nail on the head or go back to the drawing board. At first listen, the albums opener – a cover of 'Fade to Grey' by Visage sounds more like the worst fears confirmed – it sounds terribly bland despite being recorded as an obvious “summing up” of the band's manifesto. However the second track 'Metamorphose' ticks the box nicely sounding like a cross between ASP and The CNK - it would have been better as the album's opener in my humble opinion. 'Redemption' falls more into the harsh EBM category opting for bare and dark electronic treatments for a more dance floor orientated track – one to appeal to neon wool-dread-extension wearers. 'SM for SM' returns to the structure of 'Metamorphose' to whip up something that might make drive you to try to “big box, little box' as you simultaneously head bang. A song title like 'Suicide Girl' these days really does smack of unoriginal thinking and the song itself does feel a little familiar with a diet Ooomph! aura about it – or maybe its just that one very prominent late 90's Apop/VNV synth sound that is used throughout. 'Transcender L'extase' is one of the more interesting songs on the album with it's tempo shifts and dominant Black Metal via an EBM remix sense – I'm guessing this one would transfer to the live circuit really well. 'Vertige' is a rather good dance floor track that seems to be a few years too late for the original cyber-goth bandwagon of the late 90's, though I'm sure there still are plenty of DJ's that will give this a few spins. The official closing track, 'You As My Own Drug' has a very Neue Deutsche Härte edge to it that recalls acts like Letzte Instanz and Megaherz by way of a strong dance beat. For good measure the band have tacked on some remixes of 'Vertige', 'Transcender L'extase', and 'Redemption'– some good (such as Combichrist's remix of 'Vertige'), and some not so good (such as Soman's remix of 'Transcender L'extase').
Overall it is a bold album that is very much geared towards shaking up the band's image and asserting itself anew. The musicianship is without a doubt very good, and the songs are well performed and produced. That said the track list is still very hit and miss – when the band get it right they get it very right... but when they get it wrong the might as well be faceless EBM hangers-on from yesteryear. If you're feeling brave I'd check this out, especially if you are into NDH, Industrial Metal, and Industrial Black Metal – but keep in mind it is more dance orientated than your usual fare – if that’s not your bag then avoid.

Crossover a tutti i costi?
Fin dove?

Ad Inferna's self-described mix of harsh EBM and gothic metal is unusual and at times successful, and even when opening with a rendition of Visage's immortal "Fade To Grey", one immediately gets the gist of this motif. Asphodel's slightly accented presence drifts between half-spoken malevolence to black metal snarls, while propulsive bass and arpeggios find themselves entangled with sharp power chords and the aloof wail of their female vocalist. Though choppy riffs and explosive drumming dominate some moments like the speed metal infused "SM For SM", generally their marriage of EBM and rock is pretty even-handed. For example, Asphodel's baritone disdain is well paired with his operatic cohort in "Suicide Girl", and even its icy pianos and oscillating warbles find a nice synchronicity with their gruff guitarmanship. Concluded by four remixes, Beborn Beton's barren IDM mix is intriguingly minimalist, yet Reaper proves to have the best grasp on Ad Inferna's concept. With charged guitars buzzing aggressively alongside a ruthless bass punch, its pacing and syncopation is surgically precise. Overall, Ad Inferna's crossover is interesting, but as Reaper's sublime mix proves, it could still use a bit more polish.

Title: Trance :N: Dance
Artist: Ad Inferna
Genre: Industrial, Electronic, Gothic
Release Date: 29th September 2009
Label: Soulfood

Album Review :

AD INFERNA is a French band founded in 1996. Its unique style represents a mixture of industrial and EBM supplemented with atmospheric gothic metal. The first album called ‘L’Empire des Sens’ (The Empire of the Emotions) was released in 2002 and after that the formation in vanished from sight. For almost 7 years, AD INFERNA remained silent and in 2009 it comes back with a new CD. Actually for me this album became the first introduction to the band’s music which appeared to be quite unusual yet interesting.

‘Trance :N: Dance’ entirely proves its title - during the very first listening to the tracks it’s getting obvious that the material doesn’t suffer from monotony and the whole CD is stuffed with striking melodies. One can see the band’s thorough approach to the creation of the album on which there are no run-of-the-mil or openly weak songs. The musicians used all the colours of the musical palette existing in electronic music. Each track simulates a complex construction of luring guitar riffs, accurate bass lines, dark male and beautiful female voices singing both in French and English.

The album starts with the cover version of Visage’s hit ‘Fade to Grey’. Unfortunately, it’s not the best rendition I’ve ever heard but this slight shortcoming is more than compensated by the following songs. ‘Métamorphose’ with its weird vocal part can become a soundtrack to a horror movie. ‘SM for SM’, ‘Suicide Girl’ are interesting pieces deserving attention but actually one can single out some other compositions depending on his or her preferences. All the remixes are also of good quality and may suit a fan’s taste. So, AD INFERNA has recorded an excellent album for having dance floors filled but I doubt such music does for listening at home. Yet who knows?

Ad Inferna - Trance N Dance (Dream Cell 11/ Aural Music) Review by Steve Green
adinferna-R783.jpg
When it comes to your average Extreme Metal album, I'm just about at my boredom threshold. The scene, as far as I'm concerned, is just churning out one bland album after another. Which probably explains why I'm enjoying the Industrial cds that come our way more than most these days. Here we have a French band, Ad Inferna, who are releasing their 1st album since their 2002 debut, L'Empire des Sens.
I've heard way too many covers of the Visage classic Fade To Grey, yet I still found this version, which opens the album, to be very enjoyable, mainly because of the combination of dancefloor EBM and dark (read into that bleak) vocals and the inclusion of a more
harsh vocal style around the 2 minute mark. And that really sets the tone for the whole album. Positive, upbeat industrialized music with a multi vocal attack: 2 male vocalists, one in a dark Gothic style and the other exploring the realms of Black Metal, and not forgetting the uplifting female vocals that litter the album. The amalgamation of the various styles works brilliantly and although I'm not particularly knowledgeable about this style of music, this album has persuaded me to investigate the scene a little deeper. www.myspace.com/adinferna

After a seven year absence, they are now back on the market with a record where the extreme metal of their origins blends with the darkest dancefloor EBM. Recensione di Riccardo Plata
Tunz tunz tunz. E ancora tunz.

Arkames & V.N.A.

Anspieltipp: Fade to Grey (Visage Cover)

Anspieltipp: SM for SM

Anspieltipp: Suicide Girl

Quite interesting this album from Ad Inferna (previously known as De Profundis), knowing that previously they played some kinda weird Symphonic Black Metal. Anyway, that era is over and nowadays Ad Inferna is performing a blend of Symphonic Melodic Gothic, EBM, together with an average dose of Industrialized Metal. Yes quite a good blend and Ad Inferna have incorporated them properly to come out with a sound they have!

The album starts with a remix of the popular song entitled ‘Fade to Grey’ (by Visage) and all I can say is that the Metal version of the song they made is quite good and doesn’t ruin the style of the original song. As for the rest of their songs, I can say that at times they have certain approaches which remind me quite a lot of Samael and Evereve.

Music is very rhythmic and rich with those kinds of celestial melodies and sounds composed of synthetic orchestrations and analog synths which are commonly found in Euro-Trance. Besides that, the band also used a good blend of voices, varying from the typical spoken male voice commonly found in Gothic bands of the late 80’s/early 90’s, together with female voices in the background, whispers, and last but not least a rasping voice typical of Black Metal (and perhaps, that’s the only remnant they have from their previous genre). If it may be bothering or not, the band sings in French, at least you’ve been informed. Although Ad Inferna is known in the Metal scene, nowadays they are less Metal but more Electro!

Finally, the whole album features 4 remixes of few songs which are in the same album which are performed by: Combichrist, Beborn Beton, Soman and Reaper. In brief, these remixes represent a harsh version of the original songs performed in and with the artists’ classical touch (some harsh pounding Melo EBM).

To conclude here, the music overall is rich in melodies and symphonies. Definitely a European brand! So… if you expect to listen some tough fuzzy Metal, this album isn’t for you, BUT if you are looking for new adventures, I might really suggest you to give a listen!

Highly Recommended!

DARK VISION OF ELECTRONIC

Ad Inferna

Ad Inferna - Trance-N-Dance

Industrial

V. Orias A.: guitars, keyboards & electronix, musik.
V. V. Arkames: lead & back vox, lyrics.
Studio & Live members :V. N. A.: drums & percussions.
Session members :Asphodel : lead vox.
