Adam A7s or Adam A7Xs?

I changed from the dreaded macki hr828 to the adam A7 and it was like day and night.

But as with most near fields its a matter of personal taste and usage. I would try them both and then decide whats best for you. I do not get tired in front of those (and I sit there the whole day) but that's just me.

I would recommend a sub with them if you do not have Mains because you will have a hard time judging the bass (provided your room gives an reasonably even response, or else it won't help much).

greets,
mario

Whoops! My bad for not putting this in the "equipment" subforum btw. I thought I was in it before I posted this.

Thanks for your reply though. A sub huh? How bout a Rokkit 10? Ive also got my eye on one of those. Anyone got Experiance with this sub?

Would still like opinions/info for A7s vs A7Xs.

Ive had my KRK Rokit RP10 3s for about a fortnight and i've got to say you wont need a separate sub with them.Bare in mind they are huge and not ideal for a small bedroom

I only have the A7's and haven't the x series, but I do like them a lot. I prefer my Genelecs, but could very happily work with either.

It's really refreshing though, to see that this thread isn't full of people moaning that you posted in the wrong forum!

 posted the same^^

So I was (am) in the same situation.

Was listening to some monis a while ago, and I wouldn't buy the a7x's without a sub!
You're forced to doublecheck the bass on another system...

I've choosen the a8x(selling stuff atm to buy these fellas).
It is really a HUGE difference between the 7's and 8's, the 7's sound compressed compared to the 8's. But I can imagine the 7's would sound rad with a sub...

But a sub is no option for me, so I'll go for the 8's.

If you can't (won't) afford the sub or 8's (and incase you don't have a decent doublecheck Hifi or smthg else)then take a listen to the HS80M, "I" would rather buy the Hs80M instead of the 7's(with no sub).

Edit:
Everything is little bit ot, but to make it clear:
I don't think the main choice for you is not a7 or a7x, just sub or another monitor(atleast I think so)!

don't own them but did listen to them with a range of reference material. I was quick to write off the X series (both 5 and 7), they sounded like they are intentionally made worse to justify the more expensive Adam range. the A7 is def better just not my cup of tea.

My story with Adam is funy: At first I bought the A7´x that worked great, then I upgraded to A8´x sold them and got a pair of A7, sold them again to buy A7´s. Mixing conditiones were changing that´s why I changed the size of the monitors. I prefer A7´x against A7. Extended bass response, enhanced highs and the mid range is not emphatized like in the A7.

everything in my above quote is EXACTLY what I love about the original Adam A7's. Please don't tell me the X's don't have the same kind of freq response that makes the originals so useful..... :(

EDIT: speaking of the very tame low-end, brutal mids and really transparent, 'crystal' sounding highs.... hard to explain but once you listen to a monitor with ribbon tweeters you'll never want to listen to anything WITHOUT ribbon tweeters...

every other monitor i've personally heard just sounds like it has 'fake' highs somehow, because the high-end on the a7's is just so crystal clear and '3D'...

all IMO....!

I have the A7's and my housemate has the HS80's. The hs80's have a fuller low end but the highs and mids on the A7's are really clear but not tiring at all. I've been liking working on them alot but I've not done alot of mixing lately so not sure how the work will translate onto other systems.
I will add though, I don't think they NEED a sub. They aren't super bassy but you can still tell whats going on down there quite well.

The studio I work at has A7s - great monitors! I have A8Xs at home - even better. Bottom end is way more extended. I just love the way Adams translate to any system.

ive had the a7x's for about a month now and absolutely love them...

ive been mixing on KRK rp8s for 8 years, and i must say it is a night and day difference. it went from me saying "man whats wrong with the low mids" to "wow i have alot of stuff to fix and i know exactly what to do..."

i tried to hop on the a7 bandwagon when they came out many times starting from when they came out, and they never had enough low end for me, and just sounded so so bright, in a good way..... but not a way that id like to mix on all day.

for metal bands that are tuned super low, and anything with sub bass (synth stuff mostly) i still click my krk 10" sub on for a few moments to check whats really going on down there.. but seriously in my rather well treated control room, these A7xs go down low enough to the point where id be comfortable never checking with my sub.

as far as the tweeters go, they definitely sound smoother, and less "in your face" to me then the old a7 tweeters, not a bad thing. its like its the same amount of information coming at me, without overpowering. definitely very 3 dimensional. for me it was a toss up between the 8s and 7s too, i opted for the tighter low midbass option, i have a sub and my rokit 8s were flubby and i wanted the polar opposite. im very very happy with my choice

my ONE complaint IS the port noise everyone talks about, if im tracking a band and someone wants it loud its fine, but the one time where it pisses me off is when soloing a kick drum with ALOT of low end, you can always hear the "whoosh" a few MS after the kick hit. it takes a while to used to it.

my settings on the back are low shelf up one click, and high shelf down one click. perfect translation to other systems finally :)

I prefer the original A7's, I've worked with both at different places and I honestly prefer the mid forward nature of the A7's. That being said my main set of speakers are Yamaha MSP7's which are ridiculously mid forward.

Yeah, its not totally necessary to have a sub with them, but it helped ME a lot with my mixes especially because I have no big full range Mains. You have to set the woofer up right, as I said before. It's just a little extender to the lows.

You're forced to doublecheck the bass on another system...
hmm, you should check on as many systems as possible nonetheless, and you can always turn the sub off.
I have 3 speakers and a boombox to check the mix at my setup, but I use the Adams (with the Adam Sub 7) as my main Near Fields.

Yeah, sure, but you shouldn't be forced to listen on other system for basics...

It's not like the A7's have no low end. You can judge the bass end of things fine on them. The way people are talking about it here you'd swear there's nothing below 100hz...
