Queens NY five piece, After The Bath, play an intriguing form of emo-hardcore, with clean vocals, and influences ranging from The Cure to Snapcase. The band comprises guitarists Eric Cire and Shane Gill, David Deceglie who is responsible for the vocals and programming, bassist Chris Konoski and drummer Vinny Savino. Davids vox have a nasal quality reminiscent of Brian Malko, and work well with the harsher backing (despite occasional off notes), while his screams are powerful and emotive. The slow and melodic guitars speak volumes and ornament the vocals creating exceedingly catchy hooks. The bass and drums form a competent rhythm section, Chris taking the frequently complex basslines in his stride and Vinny providing strong beats and well placed fills.
This four track demo is well recorded and produced despite sounding slightly tinny at times overall it has a very professional feel. Opener Fear is a reasonably heavy track with occasional distorted vox, subtle nu-metal influences and an extremely catchy chorus. Far Away successfully utilises Davids programming on a very downcast song, while Wrong Place, Wrong Time is a more upbeat (musically) and memorable effort. The demo closes with Jupiter, an epic, memorable threnody.
With this demo After The Bath demonstrate not only musical capability but accomplished song-writing and some brutally honest yet well written lyrics. This is a band all fans of emotional music, and many others beside, should look out for, although if their success matches their capability, you will hardly be able to miss them..
