Album of the year is without doubt Enslaveds "Vertebrae", no competition. Then without any particular order, other noteworthy releases were

Satyricon - The Age of Nero
Testament - The Formation of Damnation (surprisingly good)
Meshuggah - ObZen
Cronian - Enterprise
Amon Amarth - Twilight of The Thunder God

+ a bunch of others, but on the whole, it was quite a weak year

Testament - The Formation of Damnation (surprisingly good)

I've been meaning to buy this album. I'm not surprised it's good, though, Testament's discography from Low and on is pretty amazing. Especially Demonic, which is one of my favorite albums ever.

We do a top 15 on this other board I'm on, but I've only heard 15 albums this year, so the last 6 I don't like nearly as much as those listed here.

Testament is great, but if you're a The Gathering (album) fan you might be a bit disappointed because the new album is more like old (heavy/thrash) Testament, not the faster one.

so i guess those are my best for 2008

as far as favorite album i bought this year has to be Solefalds Linnear Scaffold, such an amazing album and considering when it was originally released, it really deserves more credit than it gets.

I bought it off iTunes. Rocks very hard. It has the production quality of the Gathering. It's a bit more Low-ish than I thought it would be, but you're right, it has the vibe of older Testament albums with their more recent heaviness.

Strongly recommend it.
