Albums currently kicking your ass

Most Atrocity albums are different from each other. The first two are the only death metal ones though, and also the only ones that don't suck hard (though those two are excellent).

Okay, I've tried 4-5 songs each from 3 early Autopsy albums. Yes, there's diversity, but there are still things I like about MA that I'm not getting from Autopsy.

For one (and I know this may sound silly), I can actually understand a lot of Vincent and Tucker's vocals in MA, and there's something tongue-in-cheek about MA's lyrics that I find endearing.

"Their poisonous fingers / That wrote the poison lies / And what a tragedy, HA / When their fingers are remoooooooooved"

"Your fathers tried to slay me / Your brothers fell before me / Ageless still I am"

Moments like that add personality to MA's material, and whether it's through my own deafness or just a lack of lyrical talent from other bands, I don't get that elsewhere.

I mean I can hear a few of Autopsy's lyrics, and occasionally they stick out, like "YOU FUCKIN' WHORE... FUCK YOUUUUUUU" on "An Act of the Unspeakable", but nothing that makes me smile quite like MA's lyrics.

Briefly tried Atrocity, Incantation and Deicide. Been on Vital Remains for a while now, and they've done more for me than the rest, so I'm gonna stick with them for the remainder of this session. Thanks for the input anyway.

That album kicks ass. Skeletal Remains is like the retro dm equivalent. Gruesome and Rude are pretty good.

The Fragile Art of Existence still holds up pretty well for me.

So given all those parameters, what is the next death metal band I should check out?

The Chasm.

They have a rather diverse discography where most albums offer something different, including production wise as well. And they're widely regarded as one of the most consistently great extreme metal bands. Their first two albums are their most inaccessible so I wouldn't start with those.

Sorcier des Glaces - North

Haven't tired of this yet. Some tracks are a bit weaker than others, but it's just so atmospheric, evocative and beautiful at times that I don't really care. Great vocals and it totally nails the wintery aesthetic it is clearly trying to achieve.
