Albums currently kicking your ass

Overall I'm not sure I enjoyed it more than Power Trip's but I'm putting it at #1 anyways. Some little things I could bitch about (mostly production) but overall easily one of the most legit tech-thrash albums I've heard from a young band. Favorite tracks on first impression were 3, 4, and 8.

The Dark used to be my favorite but the more I listen to it the more I have to admit that a third of the songs are notably simpler/more generic than the weakest tracks on the adjacent albums, the drumming is really bland, and the snare sound is total shit.

Method to Your Madness is a perfect song, though.

I consider The Human Factor to be among their worst because it gives me 80s Anthrax vibes with its chugginess and dumb ideas, but it's still worth checking out for a few highlights (and most people love it anyways). Aside from the S/T and Hanging in the Balance, probably their best-produced as well.

Hanging in the Balance is great, a little overlong and leaves a poor first impression since the speed metal songs (which are often the first thing one looks for on a Metal Church album) are weak, but there's some really great and passionate material to be found, especially on the acoustic stuff towards the end (which Paul O'Neill had a hand in writing). Definitely their best after the first three and the last essential Metal Church album to me.

Masterpeace is pretty good, Wayne's back but he's not exactly at top form, probably their last where I'd say they still experimented with their songwriting. Half the songs are bland though.

The Ronnie Munroe period is pretty much like an extended Bayley-era Maiden deal only without ever descending into actual crap like Virtual XI did. His voice comes out a bit flat and edgeless and the songs themselves tend to have a hokey, happy feeling to them, kinda sing-a-long but too mid-tempo and often with really simple melodies. For the first three of those albums, each one seems less interesting than the previous to me. You could take half of Weight of the World and one or two songs from the following two albums and make a fairly strong album out of it.

Most people consider Generation Nothing to be the nadir, but I'm a contrarian on that one as well and I consider it to be their fifth best and the last album I'd give a 7+/10. Seems a lot more condensed and to-the-point to me, and while usually when you have the black-sheep singer trying to approximate the guys he replaced, it ends up not working, I thought he had the right grit there to legitimately compare to Wayne and Howe, while still standing on his own. Even my dad, a total Metal Church fanboy, hates the album though, so fair warning.

XI was a disappointment because from my perspective they were on an upwards trajectory and getting Howe back could have pushed them even further, but instead it kinda slowed things down again. After my initial disappointment the album has grown on me and I consider it a solid album now, but about a third of the songs are still throwaways and I'd only call one a very good song.

I remember you saying your favourite was Blessing in Disguise am I right?

Yes but I enjoy the first three a lot. I do also like The Human Factor very much.

If you haven't checked out their latest album I would recommend you do. Howe still hasn't lost his pipes at all. Signal Path is probably their best song in years.
