It's about as good (or not good) as Grave Digger's The Reaper.

The Reaper is probably their best album fam

Yeah, their early stuff is a bit primitive even by German speed metal standards, and their 2000s stuff where they try to go for more of a purer power metal sound really doesn't work with his voice or their production. 90s were their best compromise.

Might be why I'm not much of a big fan of that particular record, since it's the transitional album between War Games and Heart of Darkness, both of which are also better albums imo.

The run from Tunes of War to Rheingold are all 4/5's at the lowest (except for The Grave Digger which I haven't heard).

I guess certain bands need a certain atmosphere to fully appreciate the music.

For example, when I'm in bed at night I never put on any Sunn O))) because I'm there in the dark doing nothing else than just appreciating the music. But if I'm doing some house work or studying or doing any other task at the same time, Sunn O))) creates an envirmonment where their music really gives a good atmosphere and you can appreciate it without giving it 100% attention.

I'd prefer to explain it by context myself. Certain musical styles, albums, bands etc work better or don't work as well depending on the context you listen to it/them in.

Though I'm not a fan of Sunn O))) or drone in general, they definitely do not seem to excel in a sober-minded context or an attentive context. But as background music it probably works much better.

Very few instrumental forms of music do much for me in the former context tbh. They almost always work better as background music. One of my favourite background albums ever (which I always put on when I'm doing work around the house) is China by Vangelis for example or a more related example to yours, The Crystal World by Locrian.

I've tried just listening to them attentively and it doesn't do much for me but as background albums they're go-to's for me.

Abhoth, Afflicted, Authorize, Cemetary, Centinex, Darkified, Desultory, Excruciate, Megaslaughter, Morpheus, Sorcery, Utumno, Wombbath...

Edit: Therion might be the biggest offender. I once counted Beyond Sanctorum amongst the absolute elite of old-school death metal but now I'd say it only has four worthwhile songs (Future Consciousness, Pandemonic Outbreak, Cthulhu, and The Way). To be fair though, those four songs are better than everything the above bands recorded.

I feel the exact same way, except I quite enjoy my Utumno album still.
