Satanism on the other hand, is incorporated into Death Metal and Doom Metal just as much as it's incorporated into Black Metal.

fwiw it's more like a general interest in occult and anti-Christian themes re: Mercyful Fate but I was being lazy. That's undoubtedly far stronger in black metal than in any other sub-genre though (and doom metal, rly?).

My point is more that the lo-fi production and riffing styles of black metal up to the late 80s could be found in plenty of stuff labeled as death or thrash depending on reputation. That's the problem with black metal; it's a circular definition.

Yeah, you're right, and I probably shouldn't have said "it's used as much in Doom and Death as it is in Black", because Black Metal does use Satanism more than the other two, but Satanism is still a significant part of Death and Doom Metal (and Thrash, etc.), significant enough to say that it's not just solely used in Black Metal.

In thrash's case, most of anti-Christianity was occult-themed only its earliest inception (Exodus, Slayer, Kreator, etc) before all those bands started moving away from the roots in Venom and towards more political anti-religious themes. Even in death metal that's often the case; sure there are many Deicides out there, but the majority are just like a slightly more explicit version of thrash anti-Christianity.

Never said it was solely the domain of black metal, just that Mercyful Fate was possibly the cutting edge in taking it seriously at that time, and that a lot of so-called first-wave BM would likely be thought of as simply extreme death/thrash were it not for infatuation with the occult. Of course, some of this has changed retroactively as well; Necrovore were one of the most serious bands in their Satanic themes at their time, yet today very few people will admit that they were essentially a first-wave band.

I can definitely get behind that.

(and one of the reason's I would argue against most bands like Venom being called "Black Metal", is because nobody considered them Black Metal at the time, they were only retroactively called that after the so-called "2nd wave" came around, thus actually making Black Metal it's own separate entity. Yes, Venom has a song titled "Black Metal", and yeah, if you ask that cuntbag Cronos whether they're Black Metal or not, he'll say yes, but they're not Black Metal, they're fucking Speed and Thrash metal that has imagery and lyrical content that helped inspire what is actually Black Metal. For something to be Black Metal, it actually has to have Black Metal music. I have a real hard time considering most of the "1st wave/proto-Black" stuff actual Black Metal. They did have a major impact on what later became Black Metal, though, I definitely won't deny that. Not that I don't like Celtic Frost or anything, I do, I just don't consider it actual Black Metal. The only 1st wave band that I have a hard time with is Bathory, they're pretty close to actual black metal imo.)

None of that really matters though, because names and labels are nothing more than simply names and labels.

Fuck all this gay black metal shit. Give me this DVD pumped through a good stereo system any day of the week. Just fucking stellar. I'm not sleeping tonight until I finish this fucker.

Ribspreader - Bolted to the Cross: Swedeath revival with Dan Swano on drums. Just as good as Resurrection Through Carnage imo. Rogga Johansson is the man.

Necrophobic - Darkside: Blackened death metal, but different. When I think of blackened death, I think more of modern death metal - Belphegor, Behemoth, and so on. This is classic Swedeath, with the Sunlight sound and all, but strongly black metal influenced.

Feral - Dragged to the Altar: Straight up ass-kicking death-n-roll. Like a heavier version of Wolverine Blues.

Mefisto - The Puzzle: Demo tape from the very early (pre-Nihilist) Swedeath scene. Kind of like an intermediary between Bathory and Nihilist, really. Mike Åkerfeldt has cited it as a major influence, and with all the kickass, sinister acoustic sections, it's easy to see how.

Forgotten Tomb - Songs to Leave: Depressing melodic black metal. The kind of album you'd listen to while crying in a bathtub covered in scars.

The Haunted - Exit Wounds: The Haunted's new album is very groove-oriented. It's the first thing of theirs that I'd listened to, knowing Marco Aro from his work in The Resistance. I like it - the ultra-aggressive vocals are a massive highlight.

Grave - Into The Grave: So different from most other Swedeath. The only real unifying factor is the guitar tone. Very crushing.

Aeternam - Disciples of the Unseen: Symphonic, thrashy folk/melodic death metal. Not quite as good as their other album, Moongod, but still pretty awesome and unique. What distinguishes Aeternam from most symphonic metal is that the riffs are fucking killer: they're not masking poor riffs with grandiose symphonic bullshit.

Hammerfall - Glory to the Brave: Jesper Stromblad did a lot of the songwriting on this album, and I really think it shows. Makes me want to listen to more power metal.

Borknagar - The Olden Domain: Prog black metal. Very strange production - especially on the vocals. Icy. Kind of hard to get into at first, but an amazing album once you do.

Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun: Stoner rock/metal. Perfect for a hot, sweaty, torturous summer day.

Navicon Torture Technologies - The Gospels of the Gash
Ionosphere - Angular Momentum
Primitive Man - Scorn
Sinmara - Aphotic Womb (if someone had played it and said it was Svartidaudi I'd probably have believed them)

Going to check out the new Winterfylleth in a moment. Found the previous one a bit disappointing and the preview track for this one didn't grab me either so who knows what state my ass will be in.

Fucking killer DVD. "Nutshell", "Got Me Wrong", and "Frogs" sound better on there than they do the albums. Layne Staley was a beast.

After some squinting, I guessed that the band name was "Necronomicon", but after googling the album title I was sorely disappointed.

Necrowretch - Putrid Death Sorcery: Recent death metal of the old school variety, but somewhat different from most other NWOOSDM band. In addition to some stellar riffs, the vocals stand out as absolutely amazing. They're more akin to what you'd expect to find in a black metal record, but just absolutely fucking ferocious, like the screams of someone being burned alive.
