Artificial Brain - Labyrinth Constellation

Might take DM album of the year for me. It's not every day you see a tech death band signed to Profound Lore, but after listening to the record, holy hell.

It's Mithras/Demilich/Time Ghoul caliber tech death, the songwriting is absolutely sublime, the production is supremely organic-sounding, and overall the group is incredibly well-versed in progressive metal tropes (DSO-isms and what have you).

nothing on SNM or HA is as good as postmortem+raining blood imo, not even 'at dawn they sleep'. and i don't mean that as an insult, both of those are in my top 10 albums of all time.

Man, HA and RIB are so close. 'At Dawn They Sleep', 'Kill Again', 'Crypts of Eternity' vs 'Piece by Piece', 'Jesus Saves', and 'Raining Blood'...I still favor HA but such a close call. Seasons and SoH are listenable, but only slightly above average at best.

Slayer was amazing up until South of Heaven tbh. But HA is definitely the pinnacle of their career.

I used to think South of Heaven and Seasons were mediocre, but the more I listen to them the more I appreciate some the subtleties in their songwriting. Hell Awaits is defo tops Slayer on a whole though.

Blind bought this with the promise of epic heavy metal descriptors. I was surprised to find this is actually a true bathory-esque Viking metal album. (Not the black metal kind) Quorthon himself would have enjoyed this one.
