Albums for depression....

Oh, you've got to be kidding me. Not depressive!?! It's so emotionally crushing in many different ways and depression is a big part of it. Check out the tracks 'Pressure', 'Leave No Trace', 'Barriers' etc.
The whole album's based on suicide (whether literal or metaphorical) for gods sake.. a fine day to exit? car at the beach with clothes strewn towards the water? one missed call on the phone?
It's a melancholic album OK (it's Anathema!), but I just think it sounds "lighter" than the albums I mentioned, and since this thread is about albums that should potentially lead us to suicide... I just think A4 and Serenades have a much heavier emotional load than AFDTE, they're more choking and depressive.

A song like "Lost Control" is way more depressive and cold than anything on AFDTE.

Vinnie: "[...] ANATHEMA says with this album that it is a fine day to exit and try to just leave all that behind and start again, it's quite fresh. People talk about it and look at the cover and see the title, A Fine Day To Exit, and ask " Is it a suicide ? ". No, it's not a suicide, it's a faking suicide. It's about a new birth, starting again, start a whole new life."

Yeah, I remember when they began discussing that idea. I pointed out that it was suicide, whether literal or metaphorical, so in this case it's metaphorical. So I still kick arse.

Whatever the case, I still feel it's really depressing. Well, it depresses the shite out of me, anyway, in a lilting kind of way...

Alternative 4 is a masterpiece, and obviously very depressive. But the thing is, it's 'trying' to be depressive. Whereas 'A Fine Day..' is somehow different. It's depressive in its hopelessness. I guess that's why it affects me so much....

Yep, I'd rather kill myself to AFDTE than Alternative 4!

:p

In a way I wish Anathema just made it a complete suicide album... This 'fake suicide' thing is like they don't want to take it all the way. I guess they're trying to be a bit more mature. Too mature for the likes of me! ;)

Yes, listening to AFDTE was indeed some of the most dreadful hours I've experienced.

After listening to The Dreadful Hours I decided it was a fine day to exit that band's fanbase..... :p

Really, Cathedral?? I always saw them as party music. 'Hopkins', 'Midnight Mountain'. That's celebratory stuff!

Well, their first album, Forest of Equilibrium, is more or less proto funeral doom.

Also I should add Rapture's two albums into my list. Brave Murder Dayish excellency.

Speaking of which... I just got back from Cuba. One day when I was sitting in my hotel room I turned on the radio and heard Metallica. They played two or three songs from "And Justice For All", in between some Cuban music...at 4 o'clock in the afternoon! I mean, Cuba is not exactly a haven for metalheads...but that kind of thing doesn't even happen here in Germany (at least not on any big station). What the fuck!

But ehh, you don't mean that do you, it's an excellent album, if you were a MDB fan before, you can't hate them after such an excellent album as Dreadful Hours, can u?
