Albums that grew on you

At the gates - With fear...

One of the first really great melodic death metal albums I bought and it turned me off because of all it's fragmented and disjointed songwriting, but I came to enjoy it far more that their recent albums.

Theater of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear

Never thought I'd actually listen to it (and I've had it in my collection for years), but when I dug it out recently it grew on me insanely, especially the second half of the album. Some angelic voice going on there. :)

I don't like any of that album.
Songs such as The Break of Autumn and Raped by the Light of Christ are superb.

I'm not sure I agree, the last tracks aren't as good but I still enjoy listening to them.
They bore me for the most part, but I still find them listenable.

I don't know why, but for me, every Children of Bodom album starts sounding pretty lame and after a few listens they just grab me.

Other albums that grew on me:

Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness
Virgin Steele - House of Atreus Act 1
Gamma Ray - Insanity and Genius
Agalloch - The Mantle
Helloween - The Dark Ride

hmm... there are probably more, I'll think about it and post them later

Tool - Aenima
Confessor - Condemned
Psychotic Waltz's first two albums
Mr. Bungle - All three
Cynic - Focus
Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Carcass - Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious
Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale

All brilliant albums that took some time to appreciate.

Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger, took me a while to really understand what they were trying to do...but it's by far one of the most atmospheric cds I own.

Neurosis - Times of Grace, I love this band now..but when I first heard them I just couldn't comprehend exactly what they were trying to pull off...they're amazing though.

and lastly...Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse..great album..too raw when I purchased it..

Borknagar - Quintessence

I enjoyed that one instantly. Emperor's "IX Equilibrium" had to grow on me before I could fully appreciate it, and the same goes for "Prometheus: The Discipline Of Fire And Demise".

Abigor - Supreme Immortal Art
Absu - The third Storm Of Cythraul(Took me a while to get used to the unusual vocals)
Darkthrone - Ravishing Grimness
Thor's Hammer - The Fate Worse than Death
Unanimated - In the Forest of the Dreaming Dead.

The first half of With Fear is really something. The second half is mainly boring and pointless.

Things do go downhill from the one after Primal Breath (not sure what it's called), but Ever-opening Flower is fucking fantastic.

Tool-Anemia
This one took me a good 10 listens, then I liked it. One of the best CDs of the 90s.

Skinny Puppy-Cleanse, Fold and Manipulate(or about any of their albums)
The first ohhh....duuunoo...10 listens, it was just noise. Then around there, I gave it another chance on headphones..
:OMG:

They are HARD to get into..but once you get it..they are quite amazing. There are only two so-so albums:The Process and Rabies. The rest, espc Too Dark Park and ViVisect VI are just INSANE! They were ahead of their time and really defined what noise manipulation was all about;it's nightmares put to sound.
