Here are some that come to mind for me:

Kiss - Creatures Of The Night
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Def Leppard - Hysteria

Creatures Of The Night has the heaviest drum sound ever. It's like thunder! Speaking of which... why do the drums sound so different (and tamed) on the Smashes Thrashes & Hits version of "I Love It Loud"? They still sound much heavier than the other tracks on it... but nowhere near as much as on the album.

Warriors Of The World does have a killer drum sound. So do most Manowar albums actually.

That doesnt mean the drum sound sucks though! I havent heard any of their other albums, but the production on their new one is great!

WORST drum sound would have to be on Wolfsbane's "Live Fast Die Fast". It truly sounds like Steve's playing on some pots and pans.

Sepultura's Nation has a good drum sound, as does Root.

Ohhhhh yeah THE HEADLESS CHILDREN! Great drum sound!!!

I love the drum sound on W.A.S.P. too! I can't believe I forgot that one!!!! Closest I've heard to Creatures Of The Night so far... very raw, thunderous and energetic!

Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime is another one I have to add, and Metallica - Black album.

At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul (Adrian Erlandsson)

The drums sound quite tremendous.

I can see what you mean by inconsistent, but its a REALLY heavy aggressive drum sound (like in Warzones chorus when the double bass comes in, I love that bit )
