Alestorm

We have this at Impulse and I played the promo in the store last Saturday. I've been meaning to pick this up. Very reminiscent of Running Wild with great production! Nice release!

As for being gimmicky...

i know you didn't ahve anything negative to say, but for those who DO, as for being Gimmicky, metal is made of gimmicks. And you all fucking love them. My band subscribes to the Manowar/typical metal ethos of Swords, metal, being true and killing posers. It's fun and it's awesome, and anyone who takes it seriously is stupid.

Alestorm, like i said, would be awesome to throw on at a party and throw back some beers to. Personally, i wouldn't listen to it a lot on my downtime, but anyone who is thrown by the gimmick needs to lighten up. :kickass::kickass:

Thank you. *thunderous applause*

Finally checked these guys out.......
Seems like a band that would be a blast live!

Not sure its something I could listen to on disc everyday, due to the amazing cheese factor.

lol I can't believe people think Elvenking is a folk metal band.

Heh.

They have some folk metal songs. Not all songs are folk metal. Does that make them a folk metal band or does it make them a metal band that plays some folk metal? I don't care. Elvenking kicks ass.

Really?
It would seem to me that most people think Elvenking is a folk metal band, or more specifically a Folk/Power Metal band... including the band.

Elvenking.net:
...the superb melody that gave birth to the original mixture of folk and power...
...proved that their mixture of Epic Power Metal and frisky Folk was capable of instantly grabbing attention...
Elvenking My space: Metal / Folk / Death Metal
Right from the beginning, Elvenking set themselves the objective of finding a formula which can combine melodic metal, folk music and extreme sounds in a unique mixture.
Metal Archives:
Elvenking
Genre(s); Power/Folk Metal
Lyrical theme(s): Fantasy, Folklore (early), Death, Hate (later)
Wikipedia:
Elvenking is a folk/power metal band from Italy...
...The primary goal of Elvenking is to create a fusion of power metal and folk music...
LastFM:
Elvenking is an Italian Folk Metal band that was formed in October 1997, by guitarists Aydan and Jarpen...

Folk Metal is simply Metal that integrates the local folk music into Metal, regardless of where that local music originates. Cruachan from Ireland for example plays Celtic Folk Metal. Orphaned Land plays Middle Eastern Folk Metal.
Being Elvenking are from Italy and their sound clearly integrates renaissance music and Power Metal, one can only conclude that they are infact Folk/Power Metal.

In regards to Alestorm, they're not something I'd listen to intently for long periods of time. However, their songs would be cool to have pop up in random rotation on my iPod or PC. They'd also be fun to put one on a compilation disc. That being the case I put them on my Wish List @ CD Universe.

I herd the album about a month ago or so. I actually lol'ed at the description saying "Pirate Metal". I remember thinking "Wow, Pirate metal? I've herd of Viking metal, but isn't Pirate metal just stretching this stuff a BIT too far?". Then I was proven wrong when I showed a friend, and he actually introduced me to a band who claims to be Ninja metal  But coming back to Alestorm, they're not bad, and they're not great. It really does sound like the kind of metal that would be played on a pirate ship. I wouldn't mind checking them out live though :)
