I love this band. They're like no other. I think Dirt is one of the greatest achievements of the 90's, as is Facelift and Jar of Flies.

I was just listening to their unplugged this, and this is testimony to their great songwriting skills and Layne Staley's being a killer vocalist.

What do you guys think of AIC?

Way better than Nirvana, who were hugely overrated in my opinion.. and did pretty well to keep the brilliance of AIC overshadowed.

They were fantastic, one of my favourite bands of all times. Jerry and Layne created some unique, soulful vocal melodies, excellent songwriters. I admire Jerry's guitar playing so much because of the immense focus on dark atmosphere and powerful riffs, his solos are great too, as well as the desolate mood of the acoustic tracks. Some people complain about the lyrics but i really like them, very realistic.

why compare nirvana with AiC? makes no sense.

btw great band

Of course it makes sense, since they are both the same style. Thinking otherwise is just being thick-headed.

And I really love AiC's unplugged - beautiful stuff. Otherwise I've heard Dirt, which has it's moments, but doesn't grab me as much...

same styke? i think AiC have more a metal influenced rock , Nirvana is just rock pop at high volumes.

Couldn't possibly disagree more. Alice in Chains is a terrific band, I can't argue that, but Nirvana is just...well, they're one of the greatest bands ever! Now Kurt Cobain - THAT'S a voice. He was, and will remain, one of the greatest songwriters.

I just love Nirvana. Love 'em to death. You just can't beat songs like Verse Chorus Verse, Sappy, Even In His Youth, Old Age, Rape Me, Dumb, Blandest, Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies, Pennyroyal Tea...I mean dammit, this shit is not overrated. This is classic songwriting. Brilliant stuff.

You gotta respect Cobain. Also, there's a reason why so many proclaim that TEEN SPIRIT is one of the greatest songs ever written (while I don't agree it is Nirvana's best, it used to be and is what got me into the band). Go on youtube and it has OVER 2 million views. I think there are haters perhaps because Nirvana became so huge....? Just a thought, I always thought this personally.

Woops, I don't want to turn this into a Nirvana debate, shit....

As for Alice in Chains...good stuff. Thing is, alot of their stuff isn't top-class material. Songs I find that are remarkable are as follows;

Them Bones, Rooster, Again, No Excuses, Would, Down In A Whole, Heaven Beside You and Bleed the Freak....I mean, to me, they didn't have many standout tracks but these are fucking SWEET. Just my opinion.

I listened to Dirt the other day, and somewhere towards the end of Would? I realized that Layne Staley was at one time one of the very best rock singers in the business. Absolutely amazing vocal performance on those two tracks imo.

My favorite song by them is probably "Nutshell," and Jar of Flies is their best...the others all have plenty of flashes of brilliance but all contain some absolutely godawful songs (ex Sickman, Junkhead, etc).

I love AIC! loved almost the entire grundge era, especially AIC and Stone Temple Pilots. but my favourite vocalist back then was Chris Cornell. I also liked Nirvana but to this day I prefer AIC and Stone Temple Pilots - just because of the memories of that era...

Saw 'em live during Facelift, and they were great. I thought that Dirt was maybe the best album of that era. And I always sort of forget about it now. I listened to it recently and remembered why I loved them so much.

I wish Layne wasn't so much of a smackhead... a pretty horrible way to go, iyam. Considering no one found him for days... Anyhow, he was an interesting singer who did a lot with a fairly limited range, and he is often copied (Days of the New and Zakk Wylde in particular...and Zakk is doing a bad job of it, imo) but never duplicated.

Love AIC. One of my all time favorites for sure. (no one has mentioned Sap w/ Ann Wilson of Heart, Chris Cornell and Mark Arm... wonderfully brooding acoustic EP) Good shit all around.

"Sure God's all powerful.... but does he have lips?"
