All hype...

i heard a couple of the songs that leaked and they sounded pretty good axl is a brilliant songwriter

I think the new album will rock. I like the first single and the stuff I heard live a few years ago was good as well. I also heard some leaked tracks some year ago or so and I dug those as well. I think this will be good.

And I dont understand why people bitch about the line-up. When GNR released Apetite for Destruction they had two original members left in the band. During the illusion tour when Izzy had left they had one left.

The line-up today is:

* Axl Rose - lead and backing vocals, piano (1985–present)
* Dizzy Reed - piano, keyboards, backing vocals (1990–present)
* Tommy Stinson - bass, backing vocals (1998–present)
* Chris Pitman - keyboards, programming, backing vocals (1998–present)
* Richard Fortus - rhythm and lead guitars, backing vocals (2002–present)
* Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal - lead guitar, backing vocals (2006–present)
* Frank Ferrer - drums (2006–present)

2 guys have been in the band since 1998 - thats 10 years. How long does it have to take for a person to become a member of a band?

Jesus, Ron Thal is in GNR now?! Technically speaking, they're not likely to find a better guitarist than him - although I don't know how well he'll fit the "Slash" role of the band.

Good point about "how long does someone have to be in the band" - however, it's no longer Guns N Roses. here's no "fuck you" attitude that GNR was about. Nor are Slash and Duff - two integral members of the band and integral songwriters in the band. It was their tremendous feel that made the songs and GNR what they were.

Also, what does "When GNR released Appetite for Destruction they had two original members left in the band." mean? The "original" members (like Mr. Guns) didn't release any material with GNR. The "Original GNR" to most people (inc. myself) was the Appetite line-up.

That said however, some of the new material isn't bad, though I think the single sucks, personally. Other songs I've heard (I think one was "The Blues"?) were much better and sounded like classic GNR.

Lastly, the wait was ridiculous. Velvet revolver released 2 albums in a 3 year time span, GNR released one album in 15. Axl has to realize music isn't math - record it and get it out there - perfection isn't obtainable in art. It wasn't like Axl was working 80 hours a week and trying to find time to finance, write and record.

Yeah I was surprised too, wonder how long he will stay before Axl fires him.

Seconded.

Is there anything more "fuck you" that Axl not caring and pushing bac an album 15 years? :p If anything he doesnt care what anyone thinks. Of course in the process he pisses alot of people off. I too would have prefered to have heard the album in 1998.

Original means "the source or cause from which something arises" (merriam webster). The first incarnation and thats not the Appetite line-up so stating that is simply wrong. I do however understand why people feel like that line-up is the "real GNR" that they got to know and love. Personally I grew up with the UYI-tour line-up so Im equally omfortable with that but I saw GNR a few years ago and the new band sounded killer even with a stand in drummer they had that one show.

And I dont get the "Its not GNR anymore". Lots of bands have changed most of their crew around. Motörhead is one example and Megadeth another. Iron Maiden has just two original members, Deep Purple one (the DRUMMER out of all people) etc.

Lastly, the wait was ridiculous. Velvet revolver released 2 albums in a 3 year time span, GNR released one album in 15.

Its a shame that Velvet Revolver wasnt that good though. Alot had to do with a bad vocalist (according to me) but also boring songwriting. What I heard from the new GNR it pretty much blows anything by VR out of the water, and thats coming from me who idolized Duff at a young age (he was the reason I picked up the bass).

Yeah but he also cares WAY too much about what people think. He's a recluse for that very reason! He waited so long because he's afraid to fail.

I understand that argument - hell I'm a die hard Skid fan - so I get it. But, GNR is a unique case. Slash and Duff wrote a lot of GNR's stuff and Slash was an equally big star in GNR. The new GNR single does not sound like Guns N Roses - put that on after listening to appetite and it's day and night.

To me, No Axl, SLASH and DUFF = not GNR. I'm totally cool with the Illusion line up (after all Adler and Straddlin were mediocre musicians), you still need the core 3 members.

I'd rather they call Velvet Revolver GNR - at least it has the sound of GNR. Sure it's mediocre, but the feeling is there. I've always felt Bach should have been the singer for VR - He's almost as mental as Axl and is much more dependable (and a better singer) than Weiland.

Ultimately we'll see how this turns out, but I'm not expecting a whole lot. Maybe on par with the new Metallica. This record is going to be horribly polished and overdone, and in almost every case, these type of records seem hallow and seldom have staying power (Black from Metallica being the big exception).

I dont think anyone can know why the album is delayed so I will leave those speculations. No need because we simply dont know.

On GNR of old I do not agree on what you wrote about Izzy. He was very important for the band and wrote shitloads of songs. I was flipping through my GNR collection and only the UYI albums have songwriting credits but most songs were written my Izzy and Axl. Just a few by McKagan and Slash.

Listening to the single I think it does sound like GNR. Not the same as on Appetite but heck few bands do if they have been playing for 20 years. To me the new album and new songs sound like and updated version of GNR which they essentially are. Seeing how much stuff Axl wrote on UYI I dont mind him doing lots on Chinese Democracy.

Of course it would be awesome to see Izzy, Duff and Slash by the side of Axl again but it didnt work out and maybe we should be glad they are all around doing music still.

On Velvet Revolver I dont think its more GNR than GNR in regards to the music. The image of 3 former GNR members yes but otherwise no. I do agree that they should have hired Sebastian Bach though. I think VR would have been way better both because of his vocals but I also think the songwriting may have been different if he sang the tunes.

I hope you're not going to take that review with anything more than a grain of salt. Rolling Stone gave St. Anger a strong review for Christ sakes! The same magazine ranked Duane Allman, Jerry Garcia and Jack White over Randy Rhodes, Malmsteen and EVH! The rule of thumb for myself is if Rolling Stone likes an album, it probably sucks.

Actually, and I know it's a matter of taste, but I agree with Duane Allman and Jerry Garcia being ranked above those other fellas (who are all admittadly great). Thems two of my favorite guitar players.

...just sayin'...

I agree with those who think of Guns and Roses as having one good album (Appetite), and it is a reeeeally good album.

When they released their greatest hits album a friend of mine said to me, "They already have a greatest hits album, it's called 'Appetite for Destruction.'"

Ha.

I'm at least mildly open to the new one being something decent though. I know it is not the proper name for the band, but the samples I heard sounded kinda cool. As to buying it, well, not likely for me I guess. But I was surprised at the quality of what I heard.

That's fine in terms of preferences, but the article wasn't slated as "so and so's favorite guitarists". It was a stab at objective ranking, but obviously no list can be objective with the title "The greatest guitar gods ever".

That said however, no one picks up a guitar saying "I'm gonna play just like Jerry Garcia". You might like him, but he's inspired many many more to start smoking dope. :Smokin: Eddie Van Halen on the other hand, is within the top 5 most influential guitarists of the 20th century.

personally i think the UYI albums are masterpieces... not as good or consistent as Appetite but still incredible albums and lightyears beyond what most bands are capable of producing. axl is a talented guy and he may be able to make a good album... i'llhave to give it a few spins. it's never going to rank with the old GNR albums but it still may be enjoyable. we shall see.

Now I have loved every album incarnation of GNR. I find their bck catalouge to be exceptionally good. MY fav being UYI II - its special because its both a great great album and the very first album I bought. So its great music combined with the nostalgia.

Now I couldnt wait for the release so I did download the new album and while I had my mind set on liking it I gotta say it succeeded my expectations. Its simply superb.

As much as I miss Duff and Slash and Izzy (the very image of GNR) I dont miss their playing because on CD the musicians do an excellent job and especially the guitarists.

It is more modern and it is different but GNR always made sure to do different things with each of their three released albums pre-CD.

Im glad Axl got his shit together to finally release this.

hmmm... well i hope i agree with your opinions on this new release then.
there is a huge nostalgia factor with GNR for me... I firest heard Welcome to the Jungle back in 89 and was riveted. I borrowed the singe from a friend of mine and played it so much that I ended up destroying it. A few years down the road the UYI came out and my best friend and I were utterly obsessed with them... we listened to them constantly. Definitely one of the best years of my life.

Just keep an open mind. It isnt Apetite version 2 or YOI version 2. I only have one problem with it so far and its the pacing. Theres for example 3 ballad type songs after eachother which makes for weird pacing of the album.

Fair enough on your points, but, and I'm not being cheeky, I did pick up a guitar and say, "I want to play like Jerry Garcia." I swear it. I've been playing a long time...but I made it my goal to get as good as I'd always hoped I'd be this year, and so took lessons again for the first time in twenty years. It sounds like BS, I suppose, but I told the guy, "I like Jerry Garcia, Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix, Thin Lizzy...that kind of thing..." I really think them all excellent players. Jerry is an ungodly good player! The live stuff from the late 60s early 70s proves it...and in the later years he was just more relaxed, but still great.

I should note though, that greatness of Jerry and Duane is like the greatness of Ritchie Blackmore, in that they were amazing at improvisation. There's a special talent to that, and they could drag it out for hours, keeping things interesting all the while. It's a whole other realm than Randy Rhoades (not better, just different), but of equal talent, at least for me. I love rock improvisation stuff.

This is a very strong record, believe it or not. Sounds absolutely nothing like Appetite and not a whole lot like the Illusions either. I guess the appropriate word would be "modern", though to a lot of people on this forum it's probably the worst possible adjective when it comes to music.
Actually categorizing it as hard rock would even be a bit of a stretch, lot of industrial type stuff in there.

Some notes:
- The production is excellent, seriously one of the best mixes I've ever heard. A very "polished" feel throughout which is probably no surprise after 8 years of studio time. Wouldn't have worked on Appetite but it does here.
- Some very wicked guitar solos, mostly courtesy of Buckethead (who indeed is on the album after all and got his pic on the booklet as well). Check out the second half to "There Was A Time" for proof.
- Axl himself sounds good and sings remarkably higher than ever before. Maybe a bit too high at times but there's no doubt he's more in control of his voice nowadays than 20 years ago. But again, that was completely different music anyway.

In short: I'm impressed. :)

I'd lost all interest in GNR for years. Then a friend gave me a boot of the 7 songs leaked last year & I became hooked all over again. Those seven songs were/are surprisingly awesome....dated though they may sound. Axl simply has a talent for writing that few do. Needless to say, I WILL but the official release as soon as it's available. Again, the 7 leaked songs are f*cking awesome.
