let's see... first in terms of favorites ability/sound wise:

(by the way, i have no real concrete keyboardist preferences, though David Defeis gets serious points for being an exciting frontman behind a keyboard)

living:

vocals: this is so hard... but i'll go with Mike Patton over King Diamond since the rest of the lineup would make this so musically nuts.
guitarists: Ron Jarzombek, Alex Skolnick
bass: Sean Malone
drums: Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy)

dead:

vocals: Freddie Mercury (just to be different from whoever said Layne Staley; he was also awesome)
guitarists: Chuck Schuldiner, Criss Oliva
bass: Cliff Burton
drums: Keith Moon

and finally, in terms of sheer stage presence:

vocals: Damond Jiniya
guitarists: Janick Gers, Angus Young
bass: Mike Hakansson
drums: Mike Terrana

Ryan

Vocals:Daniel Gildenlow
Rhythm Guitars: Jon Shaffer
Lead Guitars: John Petrucci
Drums: MIke Portnoy and the guy from Zero Hour
Bass: The guy from Zero Hour :D
Keyboards: Kevin Moore
Lead Keebords: Rick Wakeman (sp?)

Composition: John Oliva, Roger Waters, Daniel Gildenlow.
Lyrics: Roger Waters, DAniel Gildenlow and Paul Oneill.

Hehehehehe that would sound wierd

[This is a tough one but here it goes:

Vocals: Jorn Lande
Guitar: Ynqwie Malmsteen
Guitar: Kai Hansen
Bass: Joey DeMaio
Drums: Neil Peart

Backing Vocals by: Michael Kiske, Tobias Sammet, Thomas Rettke, Oliver Hartmann, Andre matos, and Tarja Turunen

Produced and Engineered by: Sascha Paeth And Miro at Pathway Studios

Mixed And Mastered By: Mikko Jussila at Finnvox Studios Helsinki, Finland

That is absloutely the best lineup I can come up with and I challenge ANYONE to argue, lol

Interesting :) Here goes

(ALIVE)
Lead Guitar: Steve Vai (this was a tough one but he played for Zappa so he gets the edge)
Rhythim Guitar: Riff Master Tony Iommi (there can only be one!!! :) )
Bass: John Myung (Sean Malone, Billy Sheehan, Michael Manring all come to mind)
Keyboards: this is tough, Vitalij Kuprij, Jens Johansson and Kevin Codfert are amazing but I would have to go with someone who can also write some lyrics like Kevin Moore :)
Drums: Virgil Donati (ever since I saw him live I have been converted, this guy is a MONSTER!!!)
Vocals: SO MANY!!!! Might have to go with Russell Allen edging out the great Ronnie James Dio

Additional Lyrics: Fish

(DEAD)
Lead Guitar/Rythim Guitar: shared by Shawn Lane and Randy Rhoads
Bass: John Entwistle (going for the Who rythim section here)
drums: Keith Moon
Keys: This is hard, but I once knew this keyboardist named Louie Mastro (Camel and a few other prog bands) and will give him that spot for now.
vocals: Freddy Mercury was mentioned and a great choice, but I will go with the musical genius of Frank Zappa

wow!! there are some great lists here!! Here's mine

vocals- Russ Allen
guitar- Steve Vai
bass- John Myung
Keys- Matt Guillory
Drums- Marco Minneman

alternate list

vocals- Jorn Lande

All Star Band:
Dream Theater - current line-up

All Star Band not using anyone from the same band:

Mike Portnoy - Drums
Steve Harris - Bass
Kai Hansen - Lead Guitars
Mille Petrozza - Rythm Guitars
Michael Kiske - vocals

Drums: Richard Christy
Rhythm Guitar: Jon Schaffer
Lead: Chuck Schuldiner (Petrucci if we're only counting alive)

Vocals: Hetfield (pre Load era of course)

I tried to mix up the lineup and have everyone from a different band, but this would be my dream lineup
