Amazing places you have been

I went to several illegal psytrance parties on a site at the clifftops on the edge of the Great Dividing Range in Victoria. The sight as the sun came up was easily the most amazing thing I've seen, it was like standing on the edge of the world, you could see forever. I've got loads of pics, but none of them capture what it was like to be there.

Goddamn, China has some amazing places.

And STN, that sounds completely awesome. As dumb as this may seem, it never occurred to me that there might be some nice mountain ranges in Australia, haha. If I had the chance to do stuff like that on occasion, the idea of living there would become quite appealing to me.

Hah, I've only been to the Canary Islands, the most touristy place on earth. I plan to go fishing in Russia in the future though, that'll be great.

Is psytrance actually illegal there, or were you trespassing?

Are you really asking me that question? Trespassing of course. And no council permit, fire plan etc.

Yeah it's fun. There are some great locations out in the bush not too far out of Melbourne.

I just came back from doing the Transmongolian Express, which is a train trip from Beijing to Moscow, via Ulan Bator in Mongolia. That was pretty amazing, endured some ridiculously low temperatures. China was quite barren, there would be villages with very old, tiny brick houses, then nothing for hours and then massive factories belching out smoke and stretching for three or four kilometres. Mongolia was even more barren, occasionally you'd see Ger camps and the very odd tree. But the closer it got to Russia the prettier it became. Rural Russia was pretty spectacular, especially around Lake Baikal, the deepest lake in the world. Everything was covered in snow and the wooden cottages in rural towns were very picturesque, painted in quite bright colours a bit like gingerbread houses. But you'd also see lots of abandoned Soviet era factories and other buildings which were quite surreal. Decent sized towns in the middle of nowhere, just completely empty. After that I went to Finland, Norway, Belgium and Germany. I've also lived in Japan for a while and previously visited France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and the UK.

that's fucking awesome man, can I ask what kinda price you dropped on that train ride? And how long? Is it planned/scheduled or is it a backpacking like experience? That's the shit I need to do, fucking army! haha

Russia's not the sort of place you can just knock about without a plan as there are pretty strict restrictions on tourists, but having said that it's not totally impossible.

I went through a travel agency in Australia and they had different packages to choose from and helped with all the paperwork required for visas (there's heaps). But it's not like a boring package tour, you just need to go through a travel agent to get the correct paperwork for the visa invitation. They can even organise for you to stay in a nomadic Mongolian Ger camp in you wanted to.

The train trip itself without stopping is about six days and then you can spend time in Moscow or St Petersburg at the end and they organised homestay accommodation for that (basically locals will billet you in their apartment or house for a few days to a week). You can do the classic Transsiberian, which is Vladivostok to Moscow or vice versa, the Transmanchurian which is Beijing to Moscow just through China or the Transmongolian which is China, Mongolia and Russia. My trip (10 days total) cost 900 euros. Here's a link to the travel agent if you want more of an idea of what it's about.

If you were serious about doing it, I'd say that if you want to go by yourself do it in Spring or Summer. Doing it in the dead of Winter, I was basically by myself for about 90% of the trip. There were a couple of other Westerners in China, but after that it was just a very small handful of Chinese and Mongolians and nobody spoke any English. So if you want to do it in Winter, I'd recommend going with someone else, it'd definitely make it more enjoyable.

You're really going to leave us hanging like that huh? That's a real dick move.

Yeah, aside from their government, China is pretty much perfect in every way.

That's what I was assuming.

Does it come with throat / overtone singing lessons?

Heh? I gave you the best pic I have. Like I said, none of them captured what it was like to actually be there, unfortunately there were no great photographers.

@ Toenail, you sure it wasn't the acid that made the sunrise look so cool :p

Hah, I'm sure the context definitely added to it. Partying in that location from complete darkness through to full daytime was pretty crazy.

Wait, Australia doesn't ban certain genres of music? That's news to me.

Only Gabba and Happy Hardcore.... I wish
