Amorphis

Yeah, have you?

The album in question pretty blatantly draws on classically inspired melodic and compostional forms (which are narrative rather than recursive in the rock tradition).

The same can't be said for Katatonia and Paradise Lost.

the parallel i was drawing with katatonia and paradise lost had really nothing to do with the approaches of how they all wrote their melodic doom/death styles. just that if you liked either one, youd probably like early amorphis too. nobody really cares if you overhype amorphis' classical noodling...it doesnt affect or change what i was saying.

Elegy is clearly the best one, imo, so get it first. but be sure to check Tales From The Thousand Lakes, My Kantele EP and Tuonela too

tounela has been my favorite over the years. the vocals (both clean vocals and the growls) are weaker in elegy compared to the later albums. but the melodies are really nice indeed.

Elegy seems really poppy compared with Tuonela, consequently I always considered it slightly weaker.

Growls on practically every song and bizarre, spastic song structures and genre skipping are "really poppy" compared with 90% of the songs having catchy vocal hooks, consistent song-writing and only one having any growling? I think you have your album titles backwards :P

Well, Amorphis have basically used the same song structure since TFTTL, and continue to do so today. Elegy is good but it has a more bluesy laid back feel and doesn't take itself as seriously as Tuonela. Tracks 4 and 7 sound like new In Flames, ffs. Its like they're just rocking out, whereas Tuonela is a bit deeper, and songs have greater conceptual cohesion. I found the use of flute enjoyable and interesting.

I've heard Eclipse, it was quite nice. I have no clue what their other albums are like, though. Much different?

You could, you know...do something radical like, read the rest of the thread?

Am Universum and Far from the Sun are the only that haven't been described. The former is a catchy hard rock album and it's pretty good despite having none of the folk melodies or growly bits of the previous albums. The latter sucks and isn't worth listening to, it's a weak attempt to go back to elegy material.

just like no one feels like reading your non-contributional posts. honestly, why even post if you aren't part of the discussion? it's like that guy who just hollers something once in a while, when people are trying to converse.
Why do you insist on reading my posts if you think they're non-contributional?

All I did was ask about Amorphis' other albums and then somebody replied with a smartass remark, that's all. Let's not make a big deal out of it. :dopey:

I think TFTTL and Elegy are excellent albums. What Amorphis was doing in their construct of "death" metal IMO, was unique. At that time, remember you had the "Gothenburg" scene. In Flames, Dark Tranquility and At the Gates all were doing what became "melodic death metal." Amorphis, had a good vision for their brand of "death metal."

It was a serious suggestion. Why should we have to type everything more than once just cause you're too lazy to read a couple hundred words on the same page?

agreed. and the reason i read his posts is because unlike him, i feel that contribution to the discussion at hand requires a familiarity with context - aka reading what people write. this isn't television. people talk and people listen (read). if tubbs isn't mature enough to understand that, then i guess i could always undo my previous folly by using the ignore feature.

Go ahead. I've always had a problem with you, too.

wow... who gives a shit if he didnt read it? no one is forcing anyone to re-explain anything to tubbs. chill people.
