Amorphis

I think TFTTL and Elegy are excellent albums. What Amorphis was doing in their construct of "death" metal IMO, was unique. At that time, remember you had the "Gothenburg" scene. In Flames, Dark Tranquility and At the Gates all were doing what became "melodic death metal." Amorphis, had a good vision for their brand of "death metal."

well said.

Like I said, I can respect that TFTTL was very original and different, but I really don't think it holds up well at all. It's just not very good by modern standards, especially that horrible fucking imp they had do the clean vocals on some of the songs. Some of the songs are pretty catchy, just overall it sounds badly dated to me. Elegy, on the other hand, really holds up, even if it wasn't as important of an album.

One of my favorite bands. Elegy was their first album I heard (about 4 years ago) and it's been my favorite ever since. This album just has a certain atmosphere that can't be explained. There are a few albums that instantly bring me back to the first time I heard them, and Elegy is one of those albums. Three songs into Elegy, I knew right away that this band was special. Most people point to Tales From the Thousand Lakes as their best, but I've never really appreciated it as much as others. That might be because I became such a fan of Pasi that I missed him on Tales. I think it's a really good album, but from start to finish, it doesn't compare to Elegy.

And I'm one of the few who enjoys their softer albums just as much as their heavier albums. Am Universum is always an album I put in when I want some relaxing music. Tuonela is nearly a flawless album. I'd probably put Tuonela right behind Elegy. I just wish Pasi could have used his growls a little bit more because he shows how great he is at it on the track "Greed." Far From the Sun is probably my least favorite album they put out. It's a good album, but there are a few weak spots. And I like Eclipse, but I really miss Pasi's vocals. It's strange because I thought one of the reasons he left Amorphis was because he wanted to play more aggressive music. Then Amorphis comes out with their most aggressive album in years.

I feel like Amorphis tends to have riffs that repeat a few more times than I would expect them to without variation. This is based on listening to Elegy, Black Winter Day, and My Kantele. I like what they do, but I feel like they could use an editor.

I know... an Opeth fan complaining about a band being repetitious...
