hey i am looking for a good amp head to go straight into my computer and run through impulse's. I cant run a cab at all so am i best goin for a ss amp head? if so can you recommend one for me :headbang:

thats not a good idea. The power amp must push either speakers or a dummy load or you would blow it up. also sending a powered output to a sound card would blow that up. there are direct boxes you can buy with dummy loads but they won't sound too good. your best bet is to mic a cab or just use Native Instruments guitar rig or something.

TomAwesome Maybe you should just get a dedicated preamp instead of a whole amp. can you explain this?

so to put it another way i must use virtual stuff :headbang:

I mean just get a preamp instead of a whole head. An amp consists of a preamp (the main part that shapes the tone and adds gain) and the power amp (the part that amplifies the signal and sends it to the cab). The power amp requires a load to be on it, but the preamp doesn't. You can get preamps by themselves, usually as rack units. Examples would be the Marshall JMP-1 or Engl e530.

yeah that sound like a better idea so. with them all i do is plug the guitar in to it then into the comp and away a go? can you recommend any other preamps?

you can plug it straight into your line in and install asio4all to avoid latency issues. or you get interface (like toneport, alesis IO, firepod etc.). depends on the budget ...
