I got decent tones too with 6505 at less than 1.
Anyway I think it depends on the speakers....there are speakers that move easily like the greenbacks or v30 and others that move hardly like t75, so they need more volume to move.

The Bugera amps tends to do pretty well without needing absurd levels.
Just putting some ear plugs on and I was able to be in the same room as the Bugera without it getting close to hurting my ears. The 333XL actually starts to flub out in the power amp section after about 3.5-4 on the master anyway, so there's no reason to crank it to extreme levels.
