At around 11:26, is he talking about using one of these for micing cabs? Or the AE2500?

Always thought of it as a kick/toms microphone..

I seem to remember him using the ATM250de. I think it was for ArchEnemy's Khaos Legions, with the Peavey XXX cabinet.

I have both the AE and the ATM. They sound quite different from one another.
I haven't been very successful micing cabs with them. I think could not "get it right" as Andy suggests. .

I personally love the AE on top of snare drums though and it's indeed a good kick drum mic, the ATM is great on toms, slightly lacks bottom for bass drum duties.
I'd say you should never assume a mic is made for a single purpose. Be creative.
