ANDY SNEAPS JOB ON MIXING DELIVERANCE

I like the guitar tones on Deliverance. Very rectifier-sounding. I just don't like the overall clinical treatment of the entire mix. The drums sound chopped up and put perfectly in time, the kick is triggered to the max and even the snare sounds a bit machine-gun like at times. The whole perfect instrument seperation to the point where the mix sounds like there's an empty void behind it just doesn't work for Opeth, IMHO.

Thats some really good observation man. From my point of view, mixing and production are the ones that make even an ordinary album sound kickass. But, to make the listener play the song over and over, depends on the band he/she is listening to. Deliverance sounded terrible to me, when I listened to it for the very first time. Maybe that was because I was still in the craze of Still Life. But, as I listened to it over and over, it grew over me.

Good production and mixing is the key for a nice album rollout overall. I think Iron Maiden's Dance of Death has some pretty poor mixing. But, I am madly in love with it now, that i have listened to it atleast 50 times cause, its Iron Maiden afterall!!

I like the other albums production jobs a lot better. I personally don't care for andy sneap. I'm not saying deliverance sounds bad.

His production jobs sound to much like plastic. He also makes instruments sound dull and one dementionally. Luckily opeth is a creative force so they pulled through.

Has anyone heard Sneap's early work? Like, early earthtone9 albums and such? It's fascinating to observe how proficient he has become at what he does. I reckon he's really mastered that almost-clinical sound. I have to give him major respect, considering how much he has come on. And anyway... I quite like the sound he goes for :D

Yea the drums are my main gripe. they sound too mechanical and not natural because they are triggered so much which I think doesn't do justice to Lopez as he has so much "feel" when playing.
I also think they went a bit far with effects on Mikes voice for example the verses in By the pain I see in others.
Can't really complain about the guitar tone though.

Calling someone a 'worthless hack' goes beyond a simple statement of opinion. It's spiteful and not to mention totally unjustified since there was no reasoning given. Also, I'm well within my rights on here to respond to your opinion.

Saying he's a hack implies that the repeated success he's enjoyed in the metal scene is the result of some fluke chance and that he has no ability. The man churns out hit after hit and the bands and labels continuously go back to him because he's good at what he does. Backstage studios is constantly booked out by high-profile acts wanting the sound Andy can give them.

You may not like the sound he gives to bands, but that doesn't discount the fact that the man is very good at what he does. You can give him any piece of crap recording (Enemies of Reality, for instance) and he'll put it under the microscope for a few days and you'll end up with a crystal clear, broadcast quality release, where all the elements are sufficiently audible.

Moonlapse; despite your incredibly informative response you forgot one thing: the guy is allowed to have an opinion.

He has an opinion dude, but saying that is a bit uncalled for as he is probably one of the best metal producers in the buisness, but maybe he didn do an opeth album justice. But out of the many he has done, i dont think he deserves to be called a worthless hack for that.

Of course he is, and I'm allowed to respond to it.

Think of it this way. If someone came on here saying, 'Mikael is a worthless, talentless whore who bastardized metal with that piece of shit of a release called Ghost Reveries... IMHO'. Does the fact that it's an opinion negate that it's spiteful and disrespectful to a person who frequently reads the board? More than that, if even SOME sort of reasoning was given, the delivery may be more passable.

You can't mask what's inherently a personal attack and think you're untouchable after the fact by tagging on 'it's my opinion'.

Oh you're damn right, his first post was a personal attack. But what I got out of your first post was that if it is disrespectful keep it to yourself, which I disagree. But I mean, yeah if he's saying shit like that that justs not even critically constructive, fuck him!
