I asked Andy once about this, and he said he didn't do anything out of the ordinary for the bass on that album, and he said most of the tone came from Jack's playing.

He also has a great Bass tone on Vile's "The New Age of Chaos".
In my opinion bass tones are a whole different thing than guitar tones, you can get a decent guitar sound with good gear if you know how to play in an acceptable way, but as a bass player you can get a way better sound with the right picking or fingering technique.
I play bass a bit, sounds ok when I play a few of our songs through the bassamp of our bassplayer with the same bass and so on, but when he plays the same stuff it sounds way better and if our drummer takes the bass it sounds like pure shit
