Another stab at Only

this song sucks. i remember when it first premiered on Mtv in 1993, i was like "what the fuck?...this isn't thrash metal." shit song, from a cheap album.

WINNER!!!!!!!! I was the same way. It premiered on KNAC in Los Angeles and I too was like "WTF is this?????" This was the first song released after POT. Going from an amazing Thrash album like POT to this Alternative based sound really made me sick and I knew it would be the demise of Anthrax as we had known them previously. I was just as baffled then as I am now at what has happened to this band.

Hopefully it is not too late for them to return to their greatness

Greatness, you mean playing 25 year old material on nostalgic retro tours for the rest of their existence?

Nope. I mean actually writing quality material again and returning to one of the best Thrash metal bands out there. Touring with new material that is good and rebuilding their fan base back up. Getting credibility back within the Thrash metal world. I am not sure if musically these guys still have 'it'. But we shall see soon enough!

Believe me I have very little interest to see them play the songs they are doing on the American Carnage tour. If i see Caught In Mosh one more time I will vomit. Same with Indians and Anti Social etc. I want some new material just don't want it to sound like the past 20 years. Need to hear some great Thrash riffs which have been lacking the past 2 decades!

yeah, if they want to thrive as a solid band again they should step out of their box a little bit & have the balls to play some other material & "unsung" songs.

their set has become totally recycled, predictable, & very cheesy. they might as well already be on the state-fair circuit with their setlist of "crowd favorites" and with hamming it up for the audience with sing-along breaks and tacky stage antics.

Well they have to play these sets for these huge package tours. That is just what you get. The reality is the fans at these huge tours want to hear these songs as they recognize them and it gets them excited. If they were to play the more obscure tracks the majority of the audience would get bored and it would not go over well.

Once they start headlining again I am sure their set lists will start changing dramatically. As much as we the fans are tired of hearing these same songs I am sure the band is 100 times more tired of it. But thats what they need to do for now to please the fans on these tours

Why do they have play these setlists??? Do Slayer dictate what they can or cannot play?

an amazing Thrash album like POT to this

I dunno. POT is a good album, but not strictly "thrash". BotB for example, could hardly be called thrash......In My World, not so much either. Most of the thrash was on StD and ATL.

But even more importantly, who cares? If the music is good, it's good, I do not understand yours (or anyones) fixation on "Thrash" (or for that matter "grunge"/"Groove"/"emo") or any particular style of music.

I judge music by one criteria: if it's good I like it, if not, I don't. By that standard I rate SoWN far superior to anything else this band has done. Just an opinion.

Think about your fave band: Maiden. Do they sound like they did 25+ years ago?

NO.

Do you still like it?

Is it as heavy? No. Is it as good? I like it. But it surely is not as "heavy" as it once was.

WHO CARES? Good music stands outside categories.

i as a huge Thrash-fan also believe that SOWN is one of the best albums of their career, unfortunately it's the only John Bush-record i can listen to without skipping a song, after "Bring Tha Noize" & "I'm The Man" SOWN was my introduction to Thrax and together with Sepultura's "Chaos A.D." it was my fav. record in 1993 and i was totally impressed by John's vocals back then. SOWN is the album that builds the bridge between the old Joey-days (you can still hear Anthrax's Thrash-background in it) and the real Bushthrax-sound that started with Stomp (no Thrash to be found on an album of one of Thrash's best bands ever).

POT is heavy as fuck and the majority of it is thrash. It may be different than ATL but still has a signature Athrax sound. Sure Belly of The Best might not be the heaviest Thrash song. But I'd say songs like Time, Discharge, One Man Stands, Got The Time, Keep it in The Family, etc are definetely thrash.

I don't like much from SOWN. Songs like Only and Black Lodge make me i'll. When Only was released I felt like I just got kicked in the balls. Anthrax would never be the same. Is that a 'good' record. Sure, its written well and produced well. But that was the gateway to Anthrax turning into an average sounding generic band and started the demise of the band. But luckily it appears they may have finally figured it out 20 years later. We shall see

To each their own. I really don't believe POT is a "Thrash" album fully. A very good album. Just saying, good music is good, and so on. Have a Blatz, you'll thank me in the morning!:Smokin:
